BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The presidents of three teachers’ unions said they plan to strike if their choice for superintendent for EBR Schools is not chosen.

Angela Reams-Brown, Valencia Johnson, and Earmer Jackson held a news conference late Monday to show their support for Adam Smith.

“We will not be there on August 8th if Adam Smith is not appointed to superintendent,” said Johnson, President of EBR Parish Association of Educators.

“We need the board to understand that what we’re asking for is in the best interest of the students, the employees, and this school district,” added Reams-Brown, President of EBR Federation of Teachers.

School Board President Carla Powell-Lewis said she doesn’t completely disagree with the unions.

“It’s about time that we do right by our students and by our families, by our teachers’ unions and all other groups that desire that we begin to take a look at those who exist in our district,” said Powell-Lewis.

Powell-Lewis was one of several board members who supported Smith to be one of the top three finalists, but he didn’t make the cut. Kevin George and Andrea Zayas did make it. A third finalist dropped out.

“I expect them to support their guy and I look forward to having that same support once they see me and begin to trust me,” said George.

quote:

I deeply understand and empathize with the educators and the family members that had Mr. Smith as their choice.” Said Zayas.

George is currently Director of the LSU Lab School. Zayas most recently worked as Executive Director of Journey into Education and Teaching in Boston.

As the two finalists continue to go through the process for the job, the unions and their members are looking for someone from within the district.

The union presidents said they are willing to have their members and others strike for as long as possible to get Adam Smith named as superintendent.

Baton Rouge schools and students are in good hands with these Union Leaders.

East Baton Rouge Parish school system continues to wallow in the shite hole that is East Baton Rouge.

The answer to why is on display. But you can’t say it.

Can't wait to hear how this is the fault of St. George and/or White Man.

This is your sign to GTFO of an area if the teachers union is going full-on militant. Your kids will not get a good education. Your property value will be inhibited. Your long term growth is limited.

Strike 1
Strike 2
Strike 3

Get the F out. Now.

I don’t have a dog in this fight nor do i know who any of the candidates are.

I wonder though if maybe the choosing of the superintendent was done the way they are going against and this time they want a different approach.

Safe bet that almost no one on this board sends their kids to EBR (non-magnet) public schools.

The teachers union is extorting the school board in order to be the ones choosing who the superintendent is to be? Nope, nothing wrong with that at all. Everything is good here!

Fk them. They want control over the person who has power over them. Absolutely not. My bet is most of them can barely read pass the 10th grade reading level.

They say a picture is worth a thousand pounds, I mean words. In this case, this is certainly true, with either interpretation.

This picture perfectly sums up why the public educational system in Baton Rouge will never improve.

And people call St George organizers and pro voters racists for wanting a better school system. Exhibit A against that label.

Not a fan of teachers unions but (a) the board has repeatedly chosen poorly and (b) Adam Smith was the best candidate for what the district needs right now.

Nobody in their right mind would want these women educating their children.

This is true. However, a long time ago, we as a society decided not to put a priority on education. (making sure funding ends up in the classroom directly benefitting children).

Once this decision was made, you see on display the inevitable result. Morons running your educational system . Unfortunately, its been this way for a very long time. It's just now they don't even try to hide it anymore.

The last thing any teachers ' union cares about is the quality of education for children.

We care about the students so much we won’t even show up to teach them.

This is so dumb.

quote:

APRIL 25, 2024 – Nationally, public school spending per student rose 8.9% from $14,358 in FY 2021 to $15,633 in FY 2022

quote:

Total expenditure by public elementary-secondary school systems totaled $857.3 billion in FY 2022, up 7.8% from the prior year.

quote:

The largest expenditure category was instructional salaries with public elementary and secondary school systems spending $266.4 billion for salaries in FY 2022, which was 31.1% of total expenditures.

Btw, showing up on time is white supremacy.

I disagree with this. EBR has had a failing school system for a long time now. I think we all know the reason (the parents) but nobody inside the institution that is the EBR Public School System has had any significant ideas to address it. New blood is needed when a system has stagnated.

Why are they supporting Adam Smith other than “One of us”

Let me get this straight. The teachers in a school district that ranks near the bottom in Louisiana, which ranks amongst the lowest in the nation, will pout and not show up to work if their candidate isn’t chosen?

Ok

Then bye bitches.

Judging by ACT scores, dropout rates, and any other metric you’d care to use, we wouldn’t exactly be losing our best asset. Many of the kids would score the same if teachers were in the classroom or if trained monkeys were in there instead.
