We've had quite a few new hires in the past few months and all of them had vacations scheduled with their former employer. They all requested off and still took their vacations. One guy was here for two weeks and took a week vacation. Our boss wasn't too thrilled about it but didn't want to deny them.

What's the OT say about this?

If they let it be known and were hired, then there's zero issue.

If you let them.know during the interview process about your vacation and they offer you the job it's on them. You had it planned and made them aware of your plans to take said vacation early in your new work setting.

Everyone's lives shouldn't revolve around work. I started a new job in June of last year, but we'd had a trip to Europe scheduled for Thanksgiving for 6 months prior to even leaving the previous employer. I was sure to let my new company know during the interview process that I would be gone 2 weeks towards the end of the year. Communication goes a long way

If discussed and approved at the time of the hire, I have no problem with it.

You're fired

If I'm doing that, that should be agreed upon at hiring.

It should be specified during the hiring process. If so, should not be an issue. Dropping a surprise vacation two weeks in is in bad taste.

Looking down upon any employee for taking time off to spend with their family or complete travel plans is a POS. If it mattered to your boss it should have been asked in the interview process.

I’m sure this was discussed during the hiring process. Don’t see the issue

I would think this would be known when hired? If so I see no issue.

so they had a vacation scheduled before they quit their old job? not sure i understand the scenario.

i think if i had a vacation scheduled with a former employer while interviewing with a new company, i would jsut talk about it during the hiring process, like "hey just FYI, we scheduled this trip to bumfrickistan back a year ago, will this be an issue?" i definitely wouldnt wait until after being hired to drop it on the new employer.

edit - looks like everyone else said what i was going to say, just in less words. lol

If it was a planned trip that had already been booked, it would be something i'd expect the employee to bring up during the hiring process and get the okay.

If i'm the employee, i'd assume it wouldn't be paid if I don't have vacation days immediately on hire, unless I got a special approval from the company during said hiring process.

Do they have vacation days immediately on start date or does it take time to accrue any days?

Right. It's a negotiation point prior to hiring. If the employer agrees to it, then there's no issue.

If you take care of your employees, your employees will take care of you. Think about if you paid for a trip already and started a new job. Wouldn't you want your new employer to not make you cancel it.

100%

There should be no work / life balance.

Life should outbalance and outweigh work all day, every day.

Most places won’t let you take vacation for the first 6 months. I cancelled going to Austin for the 2019 lsu-Texas game when I first hired on because I didn’t want to be that guy that takes off the first weekend he’s scheduled to work. First impressions are important to me, others not so much so. If you spend thousands of dollars maybe so, but maybe don’t schedule a vacation while looking for a new job

request needs to be laid out before acceptance of a position.

what do you have against people living their life? if they had a vacation planned and they told you and you hired them, you're a shitty person if you hold it against them that they in fact take said vacation you allowed them to take. now, you can say without pay or something if they don't have vacation time or pto but don't say yes to something only to be pissed when the do it.

I've done this before, honestly one of the best vacations I have taken, you have virtually no stress because you just started the job and have minimal responsibilities. I did let them know I had the vacation planned before being hired.
