maybe, if you let them know you had something scheduled before taking the job. I've done that.

If the requests were approved then what is the issue?

I got the responses I wanted. "I have my precious vacation scheduled and if I can't take Braxxytn and Jayyden to their travel ball tournament in Round Rock after I've been employed with you for two weeks, I don't want to work for your shitty company".

If your life doesnt revolve around work, why did you even tell them?

What would you have done if they said no?

This is a dumb "what if", but I'll entertain it. If during the interview process in May they say "we're not going to be able to cope with you being gone for 10 work days 7 months from now", then clearly that's not a place I want to work and it would have been a silly non-starter.

I ended up being balls deep in a $515M EPC contract negotiation during that time, still said "see ya, I'm off to eat fish and chips", and guess what - the world didn't stop turning and we closed when I got back.

I accrue 248 (6 weeks and a day)
I miss working for hospitals.

The one hospital I worked with for 15 or so years, I think I was accruing 12 or 13 hours every paycheck, which equates probably to 6 or 8 weeks or some shite like that per year.

Now I have unlimited, and it's not nearly as good as the above

About a decade ago I was hired away by another firm. Throughout the whole process, I told them I had a cruise scheduled. I offered to start when I returned. They wanted me to start sooner, so I worked for a week, took the cruise, then kept going at work.

Yeah...I don't like that. I have a few friends like that and they get scared to take time off "officially" so they just end up sneaking it even though they can take it but don't want to send the wrong message. It's a gotcha game I don't want to play.

For me, it's not about not wanting to or taking off less.

As I mentioned, working a long time for a hospital, I was accruing some much time that I'd take all the time off I needed during the year, and also get a payout for unused PTO.

So with unlimited, I can still take all the time off I want, but now I lose that additional payout I was getting before.

This is a younger generation, work from home problem. It’s a PROBLEM! How bad do you really care about this job?

Meh. If I don't lose it and can get a cash payout, I feel no need to take off every hour of PTO for the year.

I take off what I need and what I want. And at the end of the year, if I have a couple of weeks of PTO leftover, I'd get a nice payout for it.

I don't really see any incentive to take all the PTO with that setup. I don't lose it for nothing.

Oh i get ya, I just don't value the money over the experience. I'd just want to spend the money on travel or something to do anyway.

I'm not interested in collecting things.
I am interested in collecting experiences.

If the company offers unlimited PTO, take off infinitely and if fired for it sue for false advertising. Either way you win.

Hell. When I’m interviewing people and i believe they’re the likely candidate, I ask them if they have any plans that would interfere with their likely start date and I let them know not to sweat it. That way it’s always out in the open.

I’ve even worked with one to schedule his onboarding after a week he took between his last job and this one. Little things like that go a long way to finding and retaining quality employees.

I should go on a job interview and tell them I have a month long trip to the Swiss Alps just for the fun of it and see what they say.

Not the Swiss Alps, but twice I’ve interviewed, once for a new position and once for a new job, with a 3+ week international vacation already scheduled, one to Japan and one to Spain. Both times I was told that would be fine and got both.

Sounds like you just aren’t a very attractive candidate in your field

I mean, what’s so unreasonable about that?

Weird thread.

Yep. I've done the same, once we get to the point of discussing start date and such. I want the info more for scheduling training and the rest of the department's schedule around helping the new person get up to speed more than anything else.

I feel like lately this board has been revealing who the terrible supervisors are amongst posters. My goodness, some of y'all seem miserable to work for.

If they let you know during the hiring process and you hired them anyways, whose fault is it?

Vacations are booked so far out in advance that it’s pretty common to already have one on the books when starting a new job. It should be revealed during the interview process and agreed upon then. I’ve never not hired someone bc they had a vacation already booked and I’ve never lost a job bc I had one booked. Expected in the executive world, really.
