We've had quite a few new hires in the past few months and all of them had vacations scheduled with their former employer. They all requested off and still took their vacations. One guy was here for two weeks and took a week vacation. Our boss wasn't too thrilled about it but didn't want to deny them.
What's the OT say about this?
I don't see what the problem is. Do you not understand that vacations are often times planned several months in advance? Should they just cancel their vacation plans because they changed jobs?

Yeah, but you're probably not the only person being interviewed so you're taking a risk bringing it up. That may be a determining factor if they hire you or the other candidate.
If you do not bring it up in the interview and then bring it up after hiring on then you should 100% not get the time off. That's dishonesty by omission.

Exactly...if I have a problem with something that's clearly granted in a benefit package I should mention it.

If mentioning that I already have a planned family vacation takes me out of the running then that’s a blessing.
On the flipside, If I were the hiring manager, I would be a bit annoyed if you failed to disclose a planned trip until after you were hired.
I’ve weirdly had a planned trip fall in the first month of employment at my last 3 jobs. I always disclosed this during the interview process and I have never gotten any flack or pushback for it.

I didn’t bring it up during the interview but I told them about it when they sent an offer letter. They paid me for the week I took off to move between jobs and then a couple weeks later I took a week’s vacation. They’ve gotten my best foot forward since because that showed me a lot about their values.

You let me know during the application/interview process and I still find you worthy of hiring, you're good.
You show up and let me know after, you're gonna get some friction. Many places have policies that you don't have vacation or PTO during a certain time span after hire.

I'll say this regarding vacation. If you don't want want me to take vacation, then don't give me the time off to take. ANd it doesn't matter what i'm taking off for. It's none of your damn business. If you're goign to give me 5 weeks, i'm likely going to try to take 4-5 weeks off.
I carry over the max every year and take every single hour of the 6 weeks I get.

yeah you definitly gotta weigh it
Definitely wasn't worth bring up
Plus, there were 5 other people interviewing for the same job and I really needed to get out of my other job.

Known vacation needs should be discussed at interview, that's just common courtesy. That courtesy is typically reciprocated by the company/boss
This.

Everyone's lives shouldn't revolve around work. I started a new job in June of last year, but we'd had a trip to Europe scheduled for Thanksgiving for 6 months prior to even leaving the previous employer. I was sure to let my new company know during the interview process that I would be gone 2 weeks towards the end of the year. Communication goes a long way
If your life doesnt revolve around work, why did you even tell them?
What would you have done if they said no?

Was it though. Did the boss say, "Look, I know you get 2 weeks granted when you're hired but we don't really want people taking it in the first ____ weeks/months?"

Yes, OP says that they took their vacation.

I should go on a job interview and tell them I have a month long trip to the Swiss Alps just for the fun of it and see what they say.

I just started a new job a couple weeks ago. I didn’t let them know ahead of time but I did talk to them before starting and asked if it would be a problem while letting them know I’m flexible and could cancel if need be. They were fine with it and told me they’d just put someone else on fryer duty until I come back.

I thought you were killing it in insurance? Last time you wrote about it you seemed pretty happy with it if I remember correctly. Market forces ? Better gig?

I will say this, if it wasn't an already planned trip prior to hire, is a real bad look.

It's not a courtesy to allow someone to use their benefits anymore than it's a courtesy to pay them their salary.

If they let it be known and were hired, then there's zero issue.
This. If it was known prior, or even if it wasn't and was approved...who gives a frick. Happy employees are better than the alternative.

We all need time off, and i wish in America we were more laid back like the rest of the world is when it comes to work/vacation.
one of my European counterparts literally took off from December 4th to January 8th this year, which i think is ridiculous. 2 weeks is the absolute most anyone shoudl ever take at one time.
I have an employee with family in Nigeria, I let her take off December 15th-January 15th. Now, I wouldn't do that every year but it had been a while since she had seen her family and she asked about it well in advance.
As long as we have coverage, I approve any and all PTO requests, and I don't ask questions regarding the reason behind the request.
