State legislator moves to eliminate inspection stickers / brake tags

More of an OT topic than Poli Board since it deals with inspection stickers (brake tags - I am sure that argument will crop up).
Typical LA government though, they want to eliminate the tag but move the charge over to your license plate renewal fee. Government truly never shrinks or gives up a revenue source.

Under the current inspection sticker scheme, $1.25 goes to the DMV, $4.75 goes to our State Troopers, and $4.00 goes to the inspection station. When HB 546 becomes law and you no longer need to spend time getting a sticker slapped on your windshield, the $10 per year that you did pay for an inspection sticker will be added to your license plate renewal. The $4.00 that went to the service station, will now be allocated to hiring more State Troopers. I’ve been told that this will result in an estimated new 115 State Troopers.

Inspection stickers are state sponsored extortion.

Eta: This bill will won’t make it out of committee just like 2 years ago.

I'd be more ok with them if they actually prevented people in rolling deathtraps from driving around with no insurance, but I have zero faith of that considering what I'm surrounded by on a daily basis.

This is a small step in the right direction. I'm all for eliminating the need to get a damn little sticker on my windshield.
But yeah, government is not going to willingly give up tax dollars. That's why people need to be very prudent before voting for new taxes.

People who drive around in black smoke makers without insurance have no money, so the state can't make money off of them, so the state doesn't mess with them much.
If you're driving around in a relatively nice car and your sticker is a couple months expired, you have some money that the state wants and you'll get pulled over.

That's not important. What's more important is making money off of people who don't renew brake tags on perfectly fine vehicles

I will take it...I hate that hassle.

State of LA can't even make a brake tag/inspection sticker that stays stuck. I bought a 2 year sticker in August last year and by this May it's falling off..and I'm not the only one.

That would be profiling.

I've forgotten to renew my inspection sticker before and have gone six months with an expired one without getting stopped. I have friends who've done the same. From what I understand, the cops generally will ticket you for one if they happen to stop you for something else, like speeding, running a red light or some other moving violation.

It's a tax. They will never git rid of it.

I bought a 2 year sticker in October 2012. It’s still on my truck. No tickets.

What's a brake tag???
somehow, many moons ago, the city of new orleans was allowed to do their own inspection sticker program separate and apart from the rest of the entire state of Louisiana
they call their inspection stickers, 'brake tags'
