I wouldn't say it is control.

I would say society says this is the system we have developed to fairly provide for one's self through their life.

Is the schoolwork itself the cause of the desire to not do it? In other words is she having trouble with it and avoiding it? Maybe she just needs some help with it.

Your wife sounds like she has some issues. Depression is what came to my mind. As for your daughter, lay out consequences and rewards and go from there. In short, make it your daughter's issue concerning school. Be consistent and fight the good fight my man.

Instead of typing all that, you could have just said your wife is dumb and your daughter wants to be a stripper.

Sounds like my oldest at 12. The light went on in 9th grade and she finished with honors and is in a college dorm.

Peace bro. Don't react with anger. Take her- just her on a little Daddy/ Baby daughter day trip. Buy her lunch . Let her know she's your girl and you are proud of her.and when the time is right let her know your expectations and walk her through why it's important for her- not you-to do well. Socratic parenting. Explain everything- how one thing leads to the next- how she is basically the sum of her decisions-so that she really thinks about it.

Kindness love and patience is what daughters need from Dad. They crave it. Make your point- set your rules with that as the backdrop.

Call these people to do what you and your wife should have done to your kid a long time ago.

you're doing the right thing

If you don't get a grip now, before you know it, your daughter will be 20 years old and will be posting selfies featuring nothing but her cleavage and selling IT WORKS trying to make ends meet until she can find Capt. Save A Hoe who not only likes her but likes her illegitimate child from her previous lover

Also, FWIW, if your child is still playing legos, she probably didn't need a cell phone

Have you had her tested for ADD? As an adult who has ADD, I can tell you that I was the same way as a child and teenager. Completing the simplest task was always difficult for me. I tested off the charts on standardized test, but my grades never reflected it. I was called lazy, didn't care, etc. I coped and have had a successful career, but it was always a struggle. It wasn't until I was an adult that I was properly diagnosed that things turned around. I know there is a lot of negativity in regards to over medicating kids and misdiagnosis of this condition, but it is probably something you should consult a doctor about. It may not be her fault and she may be as frustrated about it as you are.

For most kids, this would be an attention getter.

What's the point of all of it?

Kind of a fatalist perspective, but the "point" is so that she can be independent and take care of herself and not have to rely upon others (parents, husband, society) to do it.

Hey, daughter. Look at your cousin. You know, the one that was a prep all-american in basketball that went to Arizona and then LSU and pissed away most of his God-given talent. Learn from him. Don't be like him.

Tell your wife to give it all up then.

Don't actually do that because you'll have to sleep on the couch forever.
