Well, tonight we stripped her of all her privileges. TV, cell phone (which doesn't have full service and she only uses it for Wi-Fi calling and face timing friends), ipad, legos, toys, electric scooter, bicycle, hanging out with friends, etc. all that shite is gone until she proves to us that she can put forth some damn effort in school.
First off.... Good for you for taking it all away. Second, why the frick does she have all this in the first place if this has always been a problem? You don't give the child the world then threaten to take it away if they're bad. You give them clothing, food and shelter until they EARN those other things. That's the big issue. She may not know how to work for what she has, but only knows how to act to keep what she's been given.

My wife continued, "What's the point of all of it? What's the point of pushing her? What's the point of going to work? What's the point of having stuff? What's the point striving for more and more? What's the point of life when you're just going to die anyway? So, what's the point?"
Be very careful with this. Your wife may be battling depression and need counseling / meds. This is not a normal reaction. The "point" is your family's well being and safety. If she places so little values in that, then she needs help or it's going to get worse.

I have a 12 year old girl as well. I hate to agree with most posters, but if your wife's ready to mail it in and she spends beau coup time with your daughter.....that negativity spreads like wild fire. My little girl goes to a small private school in Hammond, and I've disallowed her to hang out with "negative nellies" because of how fast negativity spreads.
Is she into sports or any other extra-curricular activities? All of my kids have to play a fall sport and a spring sport(until they get to high school, at least).
Your wife is right....we all die. But, hell, the one life you DO have is awfully precious....live it to the fullest!

The point is - until you die - some things are necessary such as food, shelter & clothing. Obtaining those necessities requires work. Obtaining anything more than just basic necessities required discolpline and hard work. Those things are learned.
I don't get your wife's point and she's robbing your daughter of a future filled with more than just basic necessities by teaching her this abysmal viewpoint.
Is your wife depressed?
