Here’s a photo of German citizens made to tour Buchenwald concentration camp. I doubt that many who saw the atrocities walked away without shame. The Germans didn’t just fight a war, they murdered millions of their own innocent citizens. Woman, children, elderly, mentally ill. Yes, I think they should be ashamed of that.

That generation will be gone in the next ten years or so. They don't need to be proud of that era, but they shouldn't hide their heads in the sand about it. The current generation do not need to be ashamed about it, just like we don't need to be ashamed about slavery.
I've never owned a slave. That was my great-great grandfather who did. They didn't kill any Jews; their great-grandfather did. So why should either of us be ashamed for something we did not do?
Don't glorify it, but don't ignore it. It's past history once that generation is gone. Just teach the truth.

Absolutely not, but they act as if they were the trigger pullers. It's disheartening to see a group shame themselves and overcorrect for something they had nothing to do with.
I was talking to a German couple once and mentioned that I've always wanted to visit the beaches of Normandy. Just the mention of that place made them visibly uncomfortable. It was really strange.

There's a documentary called Hitler's Children that talks about the lives of the descendants of the people in Hitler's inner circle. I swear I remember one of them, maybe it was Himmler's descendant, who decided to get sterilized so the family would die out.

I disagree. Germans help elect Hitler. Germans didn’t stop Hitler and the Nazis from revolutionizing their country. Germans followed blindly as Hitler led them to war.
Something is wrong with their social structure to allow this to happen.
The fact that Hitler wasn’t from Germany makes me wonder how he could use German nationalistic pride to do what he did.

It's sort of like slavery here. I had nothing to do with it, therefore I'm not ashamed. Was it wrong what people did here 200 years ago? Yes. But I don't imagining me there are many Nazis who actually fought in the war still kicking around Germany. A few maybe, but not many.

I think all the time travelling ones who could've acted to stop it should definitely be ashamed of themselves.

Why would a country get involved in a horrific WW, have their country destroyed, and decide to follow an outsider on a second try less than 20 years later if something wasn’t wrong with that society?
The same society that orchestrated the deaths of millions of civilians. The same society that claimed hegemony over all other people’s.

The Germans, for the large part, are already. They've done a lot to acknowledge what they did.

One thing you can’t deny, the German people had big brass balls to take on both East and west Europe twice and damn near win both times. And the average German soldier was probably the best in the world during that time period.
If you take things out like the Einsatzgruppen, et al. the German army of that time period (1914-1945) is an incredible thing to behold. And almost irresistible.

WWI, nothing to be ashamed of at all. In fact, I daresay the 20th century might have been better for all had they won.
