A 7-year-old girl from Ruston, Louisiana, is hospitalized in Shreveport battling a rare and severe brain infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, the Louisiana Department of Health confirmed on August 19, 2026. Health officials state she likely contracted the organism, commonly known as a brain-eating amoeba, while swimming in Lake Claiborne in Claiborne Parish.

This stuff scares me probably more than it should. After it warms up I don't encourage any swimming in natural waters. We find something else to do for the summer.

My friend knows her parents very well and from what I understand, she’s not doing good at all.

Figured there would be some poster who know the family or at least know someone who does. As I understand, surviving is rare. Terrible

Ditto!!!
I mean if I got it, the thing would likely starve to death, but for my family...

Seems crazy we havn't figured out a way to treat these. It seems like several people a year die from this and we have no defense.

ETA: downvote all you want, nose clips can save you or your kid’s life.

That’s tough for the parents. I can’t imagine watching this thing play out and not being able to do anything about it.

Yeah in my youth I would swim in our local lake throughout the summer but in recent years once the July heat starts kicking in strong I'm out until September.

I love the water and always have. This is rare, but also very deadly. From what I understand, you get this from water entering your nose. Do your own research, but my understanding is that nose clips prevent this. I am a pretty good swimmer and can't recall the last time water has entered my nose.

Praying every day since I learned about this. Hard to think that something Southern children grew up taking for granted could be so dangerous.

It’s not that we don’t have an antibiotic, the problem is that it is very rare and when it does happen, it usually presents itself late. Then you’re also talking brain surgery probably for treatment and that in itself is devastating.

That's heartbreaking, i had a full blown mental crashout ten years ago thinking i had or was going to get this. I grew up at the lake and it's still my favorite place in the world but i have to do a lot of self reassurance and and dealing with those thoughts when my kids swim in lakes. I'd rather them not but would never take that from them.
Will definitely pray for the family as they are living every parents worst nightmare.

Thats heartbreaking. I cant imagine the difficulty of dealing with something that seems so mundane and harmless threatening your child's life. As a kid we swam in all kinds of awful places in the dead of summer. Blind river, amite river, mississippi river, gulf of Mexico, even caminada bay without thinking twice about it.

Considering how fricking hot it's been, this is going to be a frequent occurrence.

Damn, that’s so heartbreaking. 97% fatality rate. Prayers for a miracle.

Ent told me to not even let water in my nose from the shower during summer if it’s not from well water and to wear nose clips in brackish water

Sadly, no one does well with it. It's a pretty shitty situation for all involved.

My wife knows her mom from college. It’s torn her up seeing the updates and having that personal connection.

I’m used to the hate over this.
My daughter used to get so pissed at me because I wouldn’t let her in Lake Murray without a nose clip.
She just quit going rather than look like a goober being the only kid wearing a clip.
Didn’t care then, don’t care now- brain eating amoebas is nothing to eff around with.

Alabama not having cases seems odd with all the surrounding states.
