Thank you for your volunteer work post-Katrina, prostyleoffensetime. I’ve spent enough time on the MS Gulf Coast since then to know how much the service given by the volunteers meant then, and still means to them.
Of the restaurants you mentioned, Anthony’s is the only one we are familiar with. From my research, it looks like there’s been a bit of growth, and perhaps turnover, since our last long visit.
This will be a special-occasion trip. In the past, we’ve spent it on the FL panhandle, but for various reasons that doesn’t work for us this year. I enjoy Ocean Springs for its art-centric personality, but also for the maritime connection. (A college friend’s family were boat-builders there.) We hope to enjoy cycling, kayaking, and fishing while there, in addition to the pastimes I mentioned above. I look forward to your trip report!

Going to be in OS later this summer. We have spent time there over the years, but usually just for a weekend. This will be a longer stay. Anyone have suggestions for food, shopping, activities that we may not be aware of? Our last visit there was in 2021.
re: It's gonna be a dirty runoff, Fleming dropping news

Trump’s track record for hiring women is not good. He seems to overvalue looks when “casting” his choices. I am concerned that Letlow will unleash some very unpleasant surprises down the road if she gets the seat, and that we will be stuck with her for many, many years. Fleming is effectively term-limited by his age. Hearing Letlow speak in the various sound bites since Saturday’s election has not allayed my fears about her intelligence. And seeing her very young children with her on stage gives me even more concern. Those children do not need a mother who is taking on what should be a very time-consuming job, especially after losing their father so suddenly. Fleming is our best choice.

For the last two Sundays, I’ve had to run an errand to the Carrollton Ave. Costco in New Orleans. I was once warned to avoid that day by a Costco employee, and have always regretted it when I did not follow his advice. However, my recent weekend trips have been - dare I say it - almost pleasant. The hordes of third worlders blocking the aisles, allowing their anchor babies to run wild, and offending my eyes and ears with their clothes and language appear to have dissolved. Yesterday I only spotted two groups which I could confidently identify as Hispanic, and both were led by women. No Hispanic men in sight. Perhaps they have accepted the incentives, and are voluntarily repatriating. One can hope.

Yup.

In. Finally saw an interview with Letlow, and was not impressed. I voted early for Fleming last weekend, and was again impressed by his thoughtfulness and gravitas when I saw a brief interview on WLAE last night. I hope to see them both go head to head in debates now that the primary is over. She seems like a bit of a pushover for a strong personality, which I believe is why Landry appears to have weighted the scales in her favor.

Take Hwy 68 to Jackson, La then come around Hwy 10 to St. Francisville. Spend some time in St. Francisville and if you up to it make a trip to Lake Rosemound and come back through Sligo Rd.
Was coming here to say this. I would recommend driving north towards Woodville, MS, and heading for the Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area. That area of the state does not look like Louisiana. Rolling hills. Especially beautiful in the fall.

quote:I am in that number, according to 23andme. A second cousin traced our genealogy back to an aristocratic second son who emigrated to Maryland in the 1600s. A generation or two down the line, the then planter’s son had a child when he was in his teens, with a teenage mother. That child was disinherited. I’m inclined to believe he was biracial. That child’s widow later petitioned the newly formed United States for his war benefits, after he died fighting in the RW.
About 12% of Louisiana's white population has at least 1% African ancestry.

Ted’s gave us just what we wanted, with the added bonus of dining with a bunch of real New Orleanians, not a transplant in sight. Yes, the place is old, and it looks it. Did we mind? No! Too much of the city is being gentrified out of all recognition. We didn’t want any of that chichi stuff, which I’m sure is coming in the new build.
Two dumpy places that were mostly empty most of the time that people are now coming out the woodwork to screech hysterically over them closing.

Yup! Kicked out of The Red Hen in Lexington, VA for the same reason: the staff felt “unsafe.” We are doomed!
Apparently, that restaurant closed and reopened with a new name in an effort to rebrand after their customer base disappeared in the wake of the 2018 incident involving then White House spokeswoman Huckabee.

I’m partial to Mephisto for his name. Might be a mouthful when you call him, though. (Our cats’ names are suggestions only, as they always get played around with until they become ridiculous.)

I have a few I’m sure. What’s weird is when I get a Facebook birthday notification for someone who I know has been dead for years.

quote:I was on a message board for a local public school (magnet) post-Katrina. Some Karen tried to police this behavior during that first post-Katrina MG, posting about teen drinking she had observed along the St. Chas route. She was shut down by the parents with the quickness, told to MHOB, and to keep her nose out of it. I was impressed by how quickly the wagons were circled.
When I was in high school 20 years ago, there would be teachers from the Catholic high schools actively looking out for kids drinking on the Mardi Gras parade route.

Social media has made it so easy for these bad actors to stir up a storm, that this year has been a tough one for our parades. And our pandering politicians aren’t helping the situation.
Honestly it doesn’t much matter to any of this but if hurling it as an insult, just trying to help you out here

Looks like this Crista Rock character is originally from Ohio, and came to New Orleans following Katrina, to hitch her career to the news coverage of the city’s travails. Can we put her on a train back up north, please? I don’t want my hometown infested with anymore of this kind of negative energy. (Scroll to the bottom of her resume on the posted link.)

They are doing the same thing Elon Musk got called a Nazi for. It’s hard to tell because of the number of people in front of them on the float, but they are tapping their heart first. And one kid has been doxxed, with his high school identified. I’m so tired of these transplant Karens contaminating our culture. The IG poster’s most recent reel features a bunch of degenerates at one of the MG FQ parades. So that behavior is fine with her, but young men having fun on a float is not. *It’s so tiresome gif.*
