The fact that it's 2026 and we still do not have an effective treatment for primary amebic meningoencephalitis is an absolute embarrassment for the current state of medical science.
That is ~2.5 cases in the entire USA per year. That is .000083% of all USA yearly deaths per year.
This shite is rare as frick.
Would it be great to have a cure? Yes.
As sad as it may be, no one is working to create a treatment for something that is that rare.

Just got a text from a friend of mine in Monroe. She did not make it. Passed away last night. Praying for this family in this tragic time of loss. Godspeed sweet Lillian.

I don't enjoy water nearly enough for this to be worth it. I understand it's rare, but also it happens. Every year.
If I were someone who really enjoyed getting out into the water it'd be a priority for me to move somewhere the water didn't routinely get warm enough for this. Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, etc.

From the family’s Facebook page “Love for Lillian”. Prayers for her family and others that loved her.
Last night Lillian ran from our arms to the arms of Jesus.
The injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from. Everyone did everything they could to keep her here. We are heartbroken and honestly do not know what to do next. How do we put one foot in front of the other without our girl?
Our foundation is still in Jesus. We didn’t get to keep our girl but we watched miracles happen on her behalf. We believe God is good. He will give us strength when we have none left. He’s given us a community of support that I don’t think can be found anywhere else in the world. Lil would have loved seeing everyone come together and she would have been right in the middle of it trying to help where she could.
We are devastated. We know you are too. Pray for our boys. They are going to need it so much. Pray for our friends and family, they are so sad and somehow still showing up for us. Pray for us, we won’t be able to do this without it.
We are so grateful to you for loving our girl.

Oh nooooo. I read about this yesterday and it mentioned she seemed to be doing a bit better. Was hoping she would have pulled through. Poor family. Just awful.

I do not personally know the family, but my father knows the mother through church having served on committees with her. From all that I have heard from him and others close to them they are a strong Christian family. Please do not stop praying for them. I believe Lillian had three younger brothers along with her parents who desperately will need help trying to make it through this. On a positive note, the support this family has received from those in Ruston, and surrounding areas, has truly been heart warming. As horrible as tragedies like this are it does show me that there are still wonderful people in this world.

Her parents are better people than I am. At best I would be questioning God. At worst I would be incredibly angry and bitter.

Have in-laws that live in Dubach, close to Ruston. That city has had some pretty alarming circumstances the last decade or so for such a small town. Tornado, hurricane hit Ruston a few years back and was still a rated hurricane. Football player this year was in a coma for a month or something crazy, I think he's slowly improving, coach being arrested for rape, and now this beautiful soul. I get in big cities all that can be common but seems like quite a bit for a town that small. shite, just had a blind person hit by a train the other day. I don't know, probably an overreaction by me, just seems every year, something major happens there.
ETA: Looked it up, tornado was 2019, so in just the last 7 years there's been a lot.

You’re not wrong. Ruston has dealt with a lot the last decade or so. It’s also seen the most expansion over that time since the founding of LaTech. I am proud of how this town reacts to hardships time and again. It’s a truly special place, and I hope it remains.

Unfortunately this diagnosis isn’t an uphill battle, but an uphill cliff.
I think something like 3 people ever have survived it in the U.S.

Wife just told me she passed away today. Prayers for her family. That’s got to be unbearable pain I can’t even imagine as a parent. Hug your babies.

Damn, I had really hoped she could pull through because as others have said there have been very few survivors, they’ve all been recent and treated with the same protocol which the CDC now recommends.
The mother had posted that their doctors were in contact with the agency and had procured certain drugs, so I’m guessing she got the treatment that has saved several kids over the past decade or so.

It’s tough because early symptoms (when it’s most treatable) can mimic a viral illness. No one wants to do a lumbar puncture on a kid with what looks like a virus when the expected course is that 99.999% will get better.

You’re correct. Someone who owns a plane in Ruston had lent it and flew to Atlanta, I’m assuming the CDC, to get the drugs. They really did all they could do in this situation.
