Local hibachi spots (not the chain ones with chefs) in my area are filled with parents and young children. Enough rice in a single dinner plate for two people.

Picadilly and Morrison’s were nice places with good food when I was growing up

Not sure where you live but it surely makes a difference where you're at. Im in a pretty densely populated area (Pinellas County FL) and there are tons of moderately priced options with good quality food and service, both chains and local spots.
The Chili's around here are all very good. Clean, good service, inexpensive, and good food. There are a couple of Applebees that seem to do well enough, though I haven't been. There's also a Texas Roadhouse that is excellent and is always slammed.

Eat at home if you are smart.

I finally ate at my local Chili's about a month ago... it was really, really good. Service, food, and drinks were spot on. Couldn't figure out the table top thingy for a minute though.

yep, the Morrison’s in our town had “waiters” dressed in white jackets, slacks, and ties that would take your trays from the serving line to your table and would constantly check on you to see if you needed anything

in the 1980s, the Chili's on College drive had a Swiss cheese burger that i swear was ambrosia from God himself.
never had anything close to that since.

family restaurants are the apparatus for that

I like chilis and have never had a problem. Applebees seems to be taken the Burger King model and striving to be terrible.

The one in Cleveland sucked donkey dick last time I was there, I am pretty sure it has since closed.
I remembered the one in Tupelo as a kid and thought I should try it while over there. Bad idea

Where do the middle to upper middle class families eat now? I’m talking a low key place to take your kids. Not the date night place.

Our family eats out every meal. Usually a similar rotation for dinners at local establishments during the week. Saturdays we change it up and try different establishments. Sunday brunch is always the same spot. Always took kids with us when they were young and never had any issues.

Chain steakhouses (Longhorns, Texas Roadhouse), Chilis, local pizza and Mexican places, most recent was a Ramen and Sushi place.
