He was my 12 year old boxer, Roscoe. Truly my best friend, he was such a great dog. Held him while he passed. I know it's for the best, but man.... soooooooo hard. Anyone else experienced this?

Last night my neighbor's cat got hit by a car. We found him and took him to the ER. His spine was crushed so they put him down. It's tough.

Sorry for your loss man. I know what you're feeling because I've had to do it a couple of times. When cancer got my male Rottweiler, I was a basket case when he was put down, I've never cried as much as I did for that dog.

We had a cat for a year that we had to put down. I cried like a little girl when I was in the room. Makes me scared to think about what I'll be like when we will eventually have to put down our terrier that we've had for 7 years and lab that we have had for 5.

It was the right thing to do man because you know he would do it for you.

I went through the same thing last June. Held my 12 and a half year old dog while he passed, wept like a baby. Probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Try to focus on positives. His suffering(whatever it was) is over and he’s in doggy heaven playing fetch (or whatever his favorite activity was).

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Dude, I hate to hear when people have to put down their dog. They really do become our family members and it is not easy.

My family always had a dog so growing up, we had to put a few down, but it wasn't until I got my first dog (as in, not a family dog. I was 100% responsible for him) then 11 years later having to put him down that it really hurt me to do it.

I was so use to him that there were things I did when I was home, that involved him, without even thinking about it, that after I had to put him down, I would find myself doing.. Like going let him outside, get him a treat, etc. For a split second I would forget he wasn't there and would catch myself going to go do those things.

But I decided to get a puppy within a week of having to put him down because I am just so use to always having a dog around.
