Why not just have them pay their own way? I don’t put myself in a situation where I pay for people’s entertainment when I don’t even know them. That’s a recipe for disaster, which appears to be the case here.

A friend of my FILs would carry around a small calculator in his pocket in case the dinner bill ended up all on the same ticket. I'm not saying that either of you are wrong, just that most people don't like it. I think you learned a valuable lesson here. Don't be nice.

This makes you generous, but I wouldn't consider it normal to be expected to cover the expenses of a the trip for a gaggle of college-aged, unrelated girls, some of whom I would guess he doesn't even know.
Dressing down the guy that gave you a free place to stay, and maybe naively thought he was being nice enough to cater to you at the bars pushes the bounds of societal courtesy more than using an efficient means to recoup money, which was the expectation that was set at the beginning.
I'm not saying I never buy people drinks, and I'd bet OP wouldn't say that either, but he didn't do anything wrong here, except maybe expect his perceived good deeds to go unpunished among 21 year-old coeds.

I agree, but I wouldn't have covered the bills for them. Don't get me wrong - If I was the girls, I'd have paid him back on the spot. I'm not someone who will ever let someone cover my stuff without a fight anyway.
But I feel like OP took a big risk choosing the places they went, choosing their drinks for them (weird?), and then paying for it.

I've had situations where one person would pay for dinner or an evening somewhere for a group of friends and people paid them (sometimes me) back. This seems a little different, though, and I probably wouldn't have set it up that way either in this case.

So you're letting them stay at your place uptown for free and they bitched you out and they are staying until Thursday? No, that's not awkward. I mean, if someone was giving me a free place to stay, if I wanted to bitch about them I think I would do so after I was done staying at the free place or on my way out. Very odd.
