I think you’re missing a big piece of all this. Ask yourself (1) why we are seeing such a spike in unemployment and (2) how a massive cash injection fixes this.
People are being laid off because:
1. Businesses are closing due to the coronavirus and can’t keep people on payroll without revenue.
2. Those businesses then stop buying things from other businesses, which causes the effect to extend throughout the entire economy.
3. People who are laid off are buying less “stuff” because they are pinching pennies, which causes further loss of revenue for the businesses that remain open.
A massive distribution of cash to the population only addresses the third item, which is arguably the least consequential. From a supply and demand standpoint, it only allows people to buy goods from businesses that are open at this time.
Sure, that addresses some of the reduced demand among consumers. Which, ultimately, means more people can stay employed at those businesses that are lucky enough to be open. But that is a tiny piece of our overall economic problem right now.
The much larger issue is that a ton of businesses remain closed, and investment/expansion is at a standstill. Even if people go back to buying just as much “stuff” as they did before, they still can’t go out to eat at restaurants. Construction projects are still moving at a snail’s pace or at a standstill. Factories are still closed.
You can’t get back to full employment until those industries are back up and running. In the meantime, trying to offset the GDP loss by injecting cash leads to two results - one, people can’t spend all of the money because the supply side can’t keep up (leading to inflation) or two, we start importing more goods from overseas (leading to a large portion of that stimulus being wasted).
Last point, since this is already a TL;DR type of rant: Yes, the government can employ people to increase GDP. But those effects aren’t real unless those people are actually producing something of value. An infrastructure package might fit this bill. Mailbox money does not.

Yea..... it doesn’t work like this.
A couple stimulus payments might be ok but 6 months of 2k a month or more to everyone making under 130k would be a disaster. Ballooning nation debt combined with hyper inflation.
Consequences would be dire. Just start reopening the economy

I am not going to lie, getting that check was nice. But any further money needs to be grants for businesses directly effected.
