Also look at 1999-2005 Lexus IS300s and GS300s. The 2JZ motor is one of the best ever made. My DD is a 2002 GS300 and is the smoothest, quietest car I've ever owned.

Those is models are the worst. Get an es.

I had an 04 XTerra that was Supercharged in high school. 9 MPG and ran on premium gas. I couldn't afford to go anywhere

Question is …do you buy him some old POS with a ton of miles knowing he’s going to wreck it, or some decent POS hoping he can drive it a few years?

Why don't you let him get a job, save up, and get his own truck?

why not a Land Cruiser? Pretty much the same price. I don’t know what it is about those damn FJ’s, but they’re in high demand, so they’re still worth a fortune

Consider a Hyundai Sonata with 120k miles. It's a good, reliable car that cost less than a used Camry or Accord.

Sure, but ain’t “gifting” a kid a $15k+ car for a convenience.

I wouldn't drop that kind of money on a first car either. I paid $4K each for my daughter and son's first cars.

The ES is just a front wheel drive re-badged Avalon. RWD cars (IS, GS, and LS) are far more durable.

I had an 03 that was naturally aspirated.

Thing gave the same 15 mpg whether is was on 29s or 37s.

I've got a picture somewhere of it parked on a tiny 20×20 island in the middle of the flooded bonneville salt flats.

I just went through this and changed targets multiple times. To me, the best value was in used Civics and Mazdas. Ended up with a Civic Sport, and it's serving the kid well.

My son would love to rice out a car like that.

Is rice out a racist term now?

Because I don’t want him driving my or my wife’s car while he’s saving money.to buy his own.

Found a local guy selling a 2003 4x4 1500. Very clean, extended cab not all jacked or modded out….leather and clean interior. Dealer installed 5.3 new engine with 4500 miles on a transferable 100k warranty. Wants $10k…said engine work was just short of $8k.

Had it parked in his driveway.

If the engine had to be replaced who knows what else is ready to go. But….for the truck and a new engine…:

Also, local dealer has a clean 4Runner 2WD with 200k miles for $10k too.

Yea, I’m setting him up…his close friends will respect his stuff, but I worry others won’t. He’ll do his best and try to keep it nice…at least till he gets to college.

Was thinking about a protective wrap, but IDK.

These aren't the things that are the big issue. The big issue is that he WILL have a wreck. Not if, but when. They all believe they are better drivers than they are and also become distracted at some point. They just aren't experienced and almost all kids have a wreck before they get out of high school.
