I got a 100k mile Ford Escape. Kid wanted Suv not car. Accord/camry was first choice.
I upgraded the electronics and brakes and added USB chargers and stuff.

Cheap to insure cheap to fix.

$9k is a good price for a 2004?

I paid $9k for my 2006 in 2011. (eBay auction. Had to fly to Boulder, Co to pick up)

I would sell it but it's the first vehicle I've ever owned to never have an issue. I mean I had to replace a U joint that was noisy but never a break down. I put over 150k miles on it.
Now i just let my dad use it haven't driven it in weeks. But damn if it's not the best vehicle I've ever owned.

We bought my oldest a 7 year old Mazda 6. She got quite a few nicks and dents on it. Passed it onto stepson and he got more nicks and dents on it.

We have a dented Nissan Rogue waiting on the younger 2.

I’d be looking at something like a 2013-15 Civic. You should be able to find one with under 100k miles and pay around $10-12k.

I’m in almost your exact same situation, except I also have a 14yr old. My plan is to buy myself a car and let both teens use it while they save up for their own, which I’ve agreed to split cost on with each.

I have found ZERO civics, accords, Camrys, or Corollas that fit my below $15k mark. Tacomas? Lol there are none.

Decent availability of Rogues, Cruzes, Mazdas, and a few Hyundais. Trying to make a move by end of March and actively hunting

Wow...so SC has the same laws as when I was a kid 40 years ago. Back then I had a 66 Fastback which is still in my garage.

As for your question, I have a 16 yo here in Va...he has to wait until he's 16 and three months before getting his license. My wife's daily drive to the hospital 50 miles away is a 2006 Accord w 174K miles. Fixing to be his car. I'll buy her a slightly newer one with <100K miles on it.

He of course wants a truck. I told him if he gets a job and saves $, I'll match what he saves to get one, and include the $ from the sale of the Honda.

I will just be glad when he does start driving as he plays football, basketball and track, lots of extra trips for us.

Make sure it's a vehicle that's easy to control if he has to hit the brakes.

My oldest will be driving in a few years. I want to put him in the safest car/truck/SUV that's still cool enough for him not to get made fun of but also not insanely expensive.

It's a tough question.

My situation is a bit different since my son waited pretty long to get his permit…and here in MS you have to have it for a year before you get your real license.

I put in a deposit yesterday for a new Toyota for him, probably give it to him on his 17th birthday. He drives my manual car well, I think he’s going to love this one.

I’m gonna throw my hat in with the early 2000s 4Runner.

Make sure it’s clean, hasn’t been modded out or beaten off road and he will drive it through his early 20s if he doesn’t wreck it, sell it when he gets bored and then regret selling it in his early 30s because of how awesome and cheap it was to maintain.

Plus he will have something he likes instead of a Camry or Accord which will be more of a punchline than a point of pride.

I’m in this process for my 16 year old. I need something for him to drive 2 1/2 years until he leaves for college. I told several people that I was looking and if they were to trade in a vehicle let me know and I will beat the trade in offer.

I’m picking up his car from a relative today.

Car lots are back to paying pre-Covid prices for trade ins which they were not doing six months ago.

Folks are holding those like gold. I checked out of curiosity, and within 100mi of me there are 2 4Runners available below $20k.

It’s like you gotta know someone.

That's odd, Camrys are usually pretty common.

I have four vehicles overall and two Camrys among them, a 1997 and a 2011. Honestly drive the 97 the most, got it for $2500 with 116,000 miles as a commuter car.

Too top heavy, and too many kids can pile in.

Reliability is my top concern, giving your child a vehicle effectively opens up America to go explore. Go to Colorado…go to California…camp out, go climbing, do whatever.

Not sending my boy off in a beater.
