I think a vehicle helps them mature a bit before college. We’ll see though, that could backfire.

2008 Lexus ES 350 in Houston $6900

2007 ES350 in Dallas only 133K miles- $7500

There are deals out there, you’ve just got to get your Auto Trader search parameters right

In the same boat as you. I know someone thinking about selling one is why I’m asking. That is the IS 250.

You have a child needing a ride? An IS would be cool.

I ordered my son a Toyota…but it’s not really a Toyota, it’s more of a Subaru…and I’m not familiar with the reliability of those.

That Mazda is 19 years old.

8,000 dollars for a 19 year old car.

This market is nuts.

Under 100,000 miles- you can almost guarantee that it’s not ragged out or driven rough. I bet a gray haired old lady drove it to the grocery store and church for the last 19 years. Back seats probably never even sat in. But hey- to each their own

My dad bought a car that his kids could use but he never let us forget it wasn’t our car…when we got to college he helped us buy a car but we had to pay for maintenance etc…he did keep us on his insurance until we graduated from college.

he's gonna beat up/wreck/scratch the car and it's gonna break your heart and hurt his confidence. i'm just as hardheaded as you and bought my kids new cars. it's a huge pressure on them. just prepare yourself.

Yea, I’m setting him up…his close friends will respect his stuff, but I worry others won’t. He’ll do his best and try to keep it nice…at least till he gets to college.

Was thinking about a protective wrap, but IDK.

I bought my daughter an 08 Infinity G35, fully loaded with 120,000 miles for 6K, it has some light damage on the passenger side from the previous owner. She likes her car. Leather, V6, Moonroof, RWD. It shits and gets too.

Don't look past Sonatas, you can get a real nice sonata for 10K

As mentioned above, it's more of a convenience for the parents. High school kids have school, sports practice, band, cheerleading, jobs, etc. If a kid is doing everything right (staying out of trouble, making good grades, working and/or doing extra-curriculars) then why not?

Sure, but ain’t “gifting” a kid a $15k+ car for a convenience. I’m planning on buying one my kids can share while they save up for their own, but nothing is given.

They’re not gifting “a” kid a $15k car. They’re gifting THEIR kid a $15k car.

This. Downvote away but I’m spoiling my daughter. I worked too hard to get custody and get her on the track she’s on. I’m getting my baby a decent car.

I planned ahead. I bought my wife a car that she drove for three years and she passed it down to my oldest. When the oldest graduated from high school she got my wife’s newer car and passed down the older to my younger kid. This plan has my youngest driving a 2014 Camry with around 70k miles on it and my oldest in a 2020 with around 15k miles on it and I haven’t had to buy a kid a new car only my bride.
