Nvidia CEO tells college grads that electricians, plumbers and iron workers have a leg up – and there’s no degree needed.

"Electricians, plumbers, iron workers, technicians, builders — this is your time. Here's what makes Huang's message relevant beyond the rhetoric: the pay in the skilled trades has become competitive with many college-degree roles, but without the debt. "

It's interesting that the CEO of a tech company (world's most valuable company, by a lot), is saying get a trade. No doubt, he needs tradesmen to build data centers so that may be his angle here.

Mike Rowe has been screaming this from the mountain top for years. The company I work for can't hire controls techs fast enough, and at good money to start. That still doesn't mean another company won't come along and poach them with a higher salary...it's crazy how well a tech can do in this market.

Starting pay of trades is comparable to starting pay of college graduates. 30 years later, that pay hasn't changed much, and you'll need knee replacement and back surgery.

Mike Rowe hasn't worked a trade job for a LIVING in his whole life. An opera singer turned tv host turned paid shill by big construction.

You think he is doing all that because he's altruistic?

Okay, sure. So we send our natural born American kids to break their backs working hard labor jobs while…

We import foreign workers to take white collar jobs and fill our professional schools on H1B and student visas and be our new upper class. Sounds like a great deal.

This response is like the idiots who say that the reporter can't give his/her thoughts on a player in the NFL because they never played in the NFL.

What will be interesting to see is when all of the white collar jobs are gone, so everyone is going the trades route. The shortage of tradesmen will all of sudden not be a problem and will even have a surplus which will drive wages down.

Skilled tradesmen have been a value to society for centuries.

I know a guy who is a plumber for the federal prison system. His hands are softer than mine because he worked to the point that he was the head guy and now he just tells others what to do. Easily makes 150+ without laboring hard.

he spent years on job sites talking with blue collar workers and reporting on how industrial operations actually run. He rightfully shed light on the dignity of skilled labor at a time when there was a full on blitz for all kids to go to college when cost were skyrocketing.

He never claimed to be a skilled tradesman and no one cares if he is or not.

Also you’re an idiot

Huang warning them that AI is going to have a significant impact and they need to be prepared for a career that will be less impacted.

Too bad the university did not tell them this during freshman orientation and instead chose to have a speaker tell them at graduation after incurring mounds of debt.

Hopefully they aren't replace by AI before they graduate or they will have loans and a trades job to pay them.

This may be true but I think you're missing the point. I believe having a job is better than not having a job.

I'm sure orthopedic offices are full of only blue collar workers.
