Don't you understand, market forces don't exist in powerman's niche of the world.

Market forces are exactly what is driving this. We have several billion in electrical work scheduled for this year alone and we're not even the biggest player in the area. There is a severe shortage of electrical workers to build out the Texas AI datacenter boom that is now reaching critical mass.

said it was inclusive of per diem...which in this case is much more than what is needed to cover lodging

Provided they can find lodging. Hell, even RV spots are hard to come by. But they are making a killing. I think Google has contacted every person with master electrician certs in a 200 mile radius of one of their sites. Crane operators is another one. We are having a tough time competing with them.

On my job most of the guys just have a long work commute and don't even have to look for lodging. It's pretty insane.

And the crane operators is a real thing. I have a lot of owner furnished equipment scheduled in the next month and the rigging contractor is suggesting they may have a tough time getting personnel to do the work. And these guys aren't some fly by night mom and pop shop.

We pretty much lost all our crane operators overnight. Had to ship some in from OKC and Tulsa. Going to be interesting to see how this shakes out when the refineries get into TAR season. Big oil could push us around on Chem side, but tech has much deeper pockets.

It is very good money. So much so, that I’ve made 3 dry runs checking commute times. 2+ hours one way is too much for me.

Yeah. Unfortunately I'm salary and as of yet they haven't done anything for the salary folks for pay escalation.

It's still a very good paying job and I don't have to work weekend so I'm not going to complain. But yeah...I'm a senior PM and have 3rd year apprentices making more than me.

Mike Rowe has been screaming this from the mountain top for years. The company I work for can't hire controls techs fast enough, and at good money to start. That still doesn't mean another company won't come along and poach them with a higher salary...it's crazy how well a tech can do in this market.

Can you please specificy, "controls tech" Seems a little broad.

For a lot of jobs a degree is a resume screen.

"We need a resume for this position" = we can throw out 75% of the resumes and try to find someone who can follow a goal for a few years from the rest.

That is for entry level at least where there is no relevant work history.

I have a couple of degrees so my opinion is not based on envy of the more educated.

I could imagine. I would guess electricians in residential probably don't make great money until they work for themselves. I hear that commercial/industrial electricians can make pretty damn good money more often, but I'm sure they require more training/certs for shite like high voltage.

Starting pay of trades is comparable to starting pay of college graduates. 30 years later, that pay hasn't changed much, and you'll need knee replacement and back surgery.

LOL, I work an IT in an office environment, and two of my colleagues are getting knee replacements. The idea that the trades are this physical hellscape and that the office is a haven from physical degradation is nonsense. Lack of physical activity is worse than physical labor.
