The people from this article do seem to need real jobs, but what about teachers? A very respectable job, but the average starting salary around here seems to be $42k. After taxes about $2450 a month. That’s not going to go far. When teachers can’t live a decent life, it seems like something is out of order

After taxes, it’s more like 2900.

That said you are talking starting salary for a person just out of college. They should have roommates, live with parents etc. that’s what single teachers I knew in the 90s did..until they shacked up or got married.

They don’t work a lot. Please spare me, I’m at work every time there is a holiday for school minus Christmas Day and thanksgiving day.

And they are basically glorified baby sitters these days. The kids are all behind.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t respect teachers. It’s just my mom taught school and she would do summer camps in the summer to make extra money. And on top of all that she’s living the life now in retirement.

bought a house with her husband in Houston, in a pretty nice area. They are far from rich

There are nice areas in Houston city limits that don't cost an arm and a leg especially if you don't have to worry about schools. Now when you start getting into schools if you want the good ones you are spending at least $500k for a house or headed to the suburbs.

It's cute you think there are still field that pay well.

It's adorable that you don't know what would happen to those jobs if too many people enter the market.

The little one is Gen Alpha but she’ll be like me and claim she’s Gen Z, like I do with Gen X, since we have older siblings

I know they would shite on Baton Rouge (just like many of us do), but at 25 my wife(no pics)and I could afford a pretty nice house.

That would be a pipe dream for us if we were trying to live in one of those major cities

Following, the responses here should be thoughtful, nuanced, and completely in touch with reality.

If my daughter moved home with a college degree to become a rapper, there will be a thoughtful response to that. Get a real fricking job.

Thank you for not lumping us in with Gen Z. I know we are close in age 27-30, but most of us got our shite together.

The same thing that happened with a market flooded with low-talent individuals with degrees in English, History, and sociology? Probably not since there is always demand for certain skilled jobs.

They just bought it maybe 8-10 months ago and I’ve been there only 3 times. I’m not exactly sure what area of Houston it is as I suck in big cities. It’s nothing fancy by no means, just in a decent to good area not far from downtown or maybe it’s considered in downtown, big tall buildings everywhere. It’s a 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom. I have no idea what they paid for it but she drives a ragged out car. Not sure if she’ll be able to get a better one now but I try to stay out of their financial business

Not as many as you think. Many are selling their houses and spending the money traveling. The kids will get zip.

Real Estate has become insane. You’ve got kids with GOOD jobs that can’t afford to buy a house. I understand their angst on this one.

Every generation has poor people

Are they poor from lack of money or is the cost of every god damn thing sky rocketing while wages move at nowhere near the same pace?

I don't doubt people from every generation have made poor financial decisions that have lead them to their circumstances, but even those of us who earn a very good living and aren't "poor" are getting less bang for our buck than previous generations.
