quote:

Gen Z-ers have been elected to Congress. They have upset big dairy. They refuse to believe that it’s too late to curb the effects of climate change with the refrain, “OK Doomer,” a play on “OK Boomer.”

But there’s something that many Gen Z-ers feel is not within their realm of possibility: owning a home.

quote:

The rule of thumb that one’s cost of housing shouldn’t exceed 30 percent of their monthly income is becoming less realistic for many in Gen Z, typically defined as people born between the late 1990s and early 2010s. Homeownership feels unattainable — more than a third of Gen Z respondents in one survey said it’s something they think they’ll never be able to achieve. According to the National Association of Realtors, last year, the typical first-time homeowner was 36 years old, a record high.

quote:

About one third of the generation’s adults live with their parents and plan on staying with them as a long-term housing solution. Others are sleeping in living rooms, rushing moving in with their partners and migrating out of big cities.

More than half of Gen Z respondents in a recent Zillow survey said that they would need to win the lottery in order to become a homeowner.

"Pursue her dream of writing" - well, maybe your dream isn't your reality.

"Goal of pursuing rap" - pipe dreamer

"Prospect of buying a home of having kids" - that's not happening in New York City sweetheart

"not only had to use her entire paycheck, but had to dip into her tip money" - sounds like she needs a better job

The set of links at the bottom of that page are even funnier:

Inside the World of Gen Z
The generation of people born between 1997 and 2012 is changing fashion, culture, politics, the workplace and more.
We asked Gen Z-ers to tell us about their living situations and the challenges of keeping a roof over their heads. Here’s what they said.

Ready for the Nu Metal renaissance? Bands like Deftones and Slipknot are resonating with younger fans, thanks to TikTok, the Y2K revival and, of course, enduring teenage angst.

Cirque du Soleil is hoping that it can expand its Gen Z audience. Could a perfume that smells like a trapeze artist do the trick?

What is it like to be part of the group that has been called the most diverse generation in U.S. history? Here is what 900 Gen Zers had to say.

Young people coming of age around the world are finding community in all sorts of places. Our “Where We Are” series takes you to some of them.

Even as social inclusion for young L.G.B.T.Q. people has grown, large health disparities between them and their non-L.G.B.T.Q. peers have not shrunk.

Something will have to give as waves of boomers sell their homes.

Wall St. of course knows that and has done the deep analytics, along with foreign investors, and is now gobbling up homes for rent. The new trend is new build subdivisions of single family homes for rent.

Never underestimate capitalism.

There are more jobs open in this country than there are applicants. Want your own place, go get a fricking job and work 50 hours a week and I don’t mean a “writer, rapper or paraprofessional (whatever the frick that is).

1. Rent is too damn high.

2. It looks like the career choices those GenZ-ers made has more to do with their inability to pay rent than anything else. A wannabe writer, a wannabe rap artist, a book editor, and server; yeah those are not exactly professions known to allow ppl to live comfortably. If the writer or the rap artist makes it big then they will realize that there is a reason why there is struggling artist phase that all artists have to go through before making it big.

I remember feeling this way in my late 20s and early 30s, and then the housing bubble burst in 2007 and made it affordable for me.

Without that housing recession, I probably couldn’t have afforded a home in Nashville until I hit my 40s.

Show me a young person busting their arse in a career field that is having trouble and I will listen.

This shite of thinking the "deserve" a home and cars and being able to eat out four nights a week while taking "unpaid leave" and/or working as an aspiring rapper? GTFO.

You know who else didn't have those things in the 60's, 70's, 80's? The same people. The term "starving artist" was coined for a reason.

Following, the responses here should be thoughtful, nuanced, and completely in touch with reality.

Sounds like she's living off of old Eminem rap lyrics.

No duh. Jobs pay $16 dollars and apartments are minimum $1000 now. Boomers and Gen X ruined the economy.
