If I knew everything I knew now about the northwest, and I was back in Louisiana and had to move, I'd pick SLC.

There are certainly nice and safer areas than SLC with better weather, but as far as economic opportunity it's at the top while still being a good place to raise a family. It can be a little hard to get your foot in the door some place if you aren't Mormon I've heard, but it's a beautiful place. Winters can be a bit gross for sure. There is some crime, but compared to the other large metros in the west it's a paradise. Seattle, Portland, SLC, San Francisco will all offer economic activity.

I leave Boise out because the economy here, IMO, is paper. You kinda have to work to get in good with good companies here. Might be a bit easier in a larger metro.

Other than safety and economic activity, Utah is a very independent state. It's got a lot of great parks, there is good skiing and other outdoor activities, it's next to ID, WY, and CO, all of which are very good states. Yellowstone is nearby. The coast is not far off.

Give me a blank slate right now with my current qualifications, I'm going to SLC.

Lexington KY and the surrounding area have been good to me. TN and the Carolinas would be great as well. Hear good things about AR.

The only way you escape any of that is by moving to a small majority white town ran by conservatives. Folks get mad when you say that but its just the truth.

So true. You mention any quality of life issue about New Orleans that at this point is entirely undeniable and that guy starts telling you to go back to your Livingston Parish double wide. It’s the weirdest thing the way that urban loyalists have completely refused to acknowledge the decay, the causes of the decay, and get absolutely furious at you for bringing it up. They are hanging onto little more than memories at this point. And that’s a hell of a lot more formerly great cities than New Orleans. The societal decay is no longer the outlier.

This. The state as a whole is a mess and quality of life is exponentially better nearly anywhere else.

For a couple with kids where is the best place to move in the US and why? Florida and Tennessee seems like top options to me.

Florida you still deal with Hurricanes (and crazies), insurance, but no state tax and but higher property tax.

I was a NOLA apologist essentially until they reinstated the mask mandates late last summer; the idiots libs from California living here these days were cheering it on too..

Leave the state. Moving elsewhere in Louisiana is like moving to a different chair on the titanic.

We don't need you worthless white rednecks clogging up our streets and festivals anyway. It's obvious you don't appreciate the finer things of metropolitan culture.

But we ABSOLUTELY need your tax dollars!

if i leave new orleans, i'm going 10+ hours away to a completely different climate and way of life

moving to (parts of) florida or one of the texas cities has no appeal to me anymore.

Florida would be great.

But think about the reasons why most of Texas’ large cities are among the fastest growing in the US. Why are corporations moving there? They are doing it because it is a more business friendly environment. This also means there is more economic opportunity for every member of your family to be successful.

And Texas wisely has no productivity tax (income tax). They use a property tax instead. Why? Because it incentivizes development to monetize property. It’s also used to fund schools which is one of the reasons it’s not a shithole like Louisiana.

It's a pretty stereotypical attitude of the pretentious urban dweller. Their identity is centered around the notion that they're better than everyone else and anything that criticizes their narcissistic fantasies is seen as an existential threat because they know deep down that they're wrong.

I live in Metairie and love it. Absolutely 0 issues. No need to go all the way to the Northshore.

charlotte is a little bland for my taste but that's generally the part of the country i'm interested in. draw a line from Western south carolina up to vermont/new hampshire and i'd like to be somewhere close to that
