Uh, manslaughter isn’t a light charge. A conviction means prison time.
in Louisiana, not necessarily.

Louisiana's current stance is that it is perfectly acceptable to have your possessions stolen and the thieves face little or no fear of repercussion. They know the law protects their safety as they are stealing the property of their victims.

And that's where this fellow messed up...want to break the law and steal but expect your victim to follow the law and not serve repercussions....
frickers need to learn it's a two way street and that laws do not prevent actions from happening.

He should have smacked the guy around a little bit then sat on him and flicked his head until cops showed up making him repeat, "I'm a stupid bitch and will never steal again."

Meh. this outcome was better for society.

That ship has sailed. But not because would-be victims have escalated things.
It should be assumed these days the person coming to take what's yours isn't coming unarmed. Only a fool would assume they weren't. Sad but true.

Never mess with a white dude in dreads and a Pantera t-shirt.

I feel like there is more to the story than this. Average person can't beat/kick another average person to death in 5 minutes. Was the guy who was killed sick or something? Bad heart? Were either on drugs?

Also... interesting potential defense of temp insanity.

Oh cool so it’s ok for the thief not to be punished

I think beating him to death may be a bit extreme, but play stupid games....

I would expect the guy with dreads wearing a sleeveless Pantera shirt at 8am also has an extensive rap sheet

Simon Morris snapped when a man swiped his wallet outside an Uptown gasoline station Friday morning. He chased the thief across the street and beat him to death with his fists and feet, New Orleans police said.

This is like the Brittany Monk case. If I were on the jury I would push for a finding of not guilty via jury nullification.

Unfortunately situations like this sort of thieving will only happen more often until a few examples are made. It's sad to say but it's the nature of such criminals.

Once again the moral of the story is don't commit a crime. If the man would have never snatched the wallet he would be alive today. If my son got beat to death for stealing I would blame my son for stealing and not the person who beat him to death.
