I'll get downvoted to oblivion but the law is correct. Human life is more valuable than any form of property.

Where would you draw the line? Are you willing to shoot a man for taking a paperclip off your desk? Many people would say, "If we were allowed to shoot, than criminals wouldn't risk it." and while that may be true, it doesn't make it any more ethical.

The college basketball coach who decked a guy with one hit, only to have the guy's head hit cement and the guy died has lead to a pretty serious charge against the coach. The news articles have avoided saying what lead up to the hit.

Would you give up all that you own for the life of a murderer? Isn't some life more valuable than others? Who knows what the money in that man's wallet meant to him. Maybe he had his rent money in there used to keep his kids from being homeless.

Hope this guy isn’t white, but the fact the police caught him suggests he is. They’ve been locking up white dudes left and right for defending themselves. I have a pretty good guess what the “victim” looks like

The version I have heard was that the deceased in the NYC was drunk as frick and punched out someone else while looking for his Uber ride.

I have a feeling he mouthed off to the Wake Forest assistant who jacked his jaw in response.

Poor Edwin was probably just trying to get some tuition / textbook money, as he was planning to start college this fall.

I think beating him to death may be a bit extreme, but play stupid games....

It’s not really so much that the thief died, it’s how the guy killed him.

Like others have said, if he had punched the thief and made his head hit the concrete, that’s one thing. But he wailed on him for 5 minutes. At some point the thief was unconscious and he kept beating him. It’s pretty messed up when you think about it.

That’s a high bond but maybe this guy has a lot of priors. Brigid Collins was a defense attorney for a long time.

He might, but money bail is still a problem. If he’s a risk of flight, he should be detained, not made to pay for his temporary freedom while fighting to defend his innocence to benefit bonding companies.

I agree. Supervised probation for 6mos is sufficient given the light of the circumstances

Woah. I get it if he pulled a gun or knife on someone. That takes a certain mentality to be ready to harm. Just pick pocketing though warrants getting killed? That’s some Middle Ages mindset right there with you people.

Woah back at ya. Do you know if he intended to murder the thief? Just because somebody dies while getting justice administered, doesn’t mean the assailant meant to murder them.

Intent is a mitigating factor, no?

Are you good with it if he only intended to deliver an arse-whooping, or is that also too “Middle Ages” for you?

Probably mentally ill.

One more reason why you shouldn't be stealing anyone's wallet; you never know when you gone steal one from a crazy guy.

Uh, manslaughter isn’t a light charge. A conviction means prison time.

But a suspended sentence is still an option, right?

I'm not saying this is a completely valid distinction that should warrant this guy getting off, but it seems to me their had to have been some sort of assault involved here, if the guy initially asked him for money and then somehow got his hands on the wallet after being turned down.

Makes it seem like a bit more than a simple petty property crime.

Simon Morris snapped when a man swiped his wallet outside an Uptown gasoline station Friday morning. He chased the thief across the street and beat him to death with his fists and feet, New Orleans police said.

Well done Simon Morris.
Very well done, sir!

How the hell can you consider chasing a guy down and beating him to death self-defense?

Why not start with being perfectly ok with victim gets to fight back with the natural biological weapons we were born with if somebody steels a victim’s wallet?

I’m good with that. Are you?
