will say though, making your employees report every two hours will keep them more focused and feel urgency.

You make the employee report a Zero every two hours, it causes them consciously/subconsciously to find something or push harder.
Or, just make shite up.

I need to know more.
Like some of our business partners email us every 15 minutes. 24/7, 365.
It’s not uncommon at all for system connection checks to be updated very frequently. I used to get like 800 emails a day. Most go straight to deleted. But if you’re working in an area that relies on tech, high frequency emails is common from my experience

There's a difference between getting lots of emails from the alerting/reporting systems of your various network, security, and systems equipment.
Quite another to have your boss tell you you have to email them and update your status every two hours.
Anyone pulled that shite with me I wouldn't even bother with a two week notice.

Email your boss that you have made a Team Stretch Goal of 150% of target and he will get check-ins from your team every hour and a half AND inform him/her that it’s your Personal Stretch Goal of 200% of target and you will check in every hour—since you are Management, you are always “on the clock” so you will check in EVERY HOUR!
During the other 50 minutes of each hour, update your résumé and go on job interviews.

20 years ago I worked in a job where the lame manager started having one of the admins walk around every morning with a clipboard to check off who was at their desk by 7:00 AM.
Something similar happened to me. I was salaried and working obscene hours. Like 60-70 a week for months. We had security badges to open the doors, so it would log when you came in. I came in at 8:15 one morning to find a nastygram on my chair listing everyone who had not badged in by 8 am. Two names were (poorly) blacked out and still readable on the list. The owner's son and the owner's buddy.
That was it for me. I'd worked overtime for months, but one morning I get reprimanded because I'm fifteen minutes late AND I was a salaried position. I left the labor laws they were breaking alone, but the company was damned sure in a bind the remaining three weeks I was there, making sure I badged in at exactly 7:59 AM each morning and badging out at exactly 5:01 PM every afternoon and there was no way to meet deadlines. That project was fricking torpedoed.
Malicious compliance!

What are the numbers that you are reporting and how much typically changes within those 2hr time frames? Is this activity reporting that could be done daily? Better yet, if this is mission critical information, don't you have a sytem with it's own real time dashboard that he could be monitoring on his own?
This whole management style works in the short term, and he will see an increase until morale, give-a-shite, and productivity drop off the cliff because "why bother"? There are dozens upon dozens of books and articles about the toxicity of micromanagement. I'd get your resume together and start a passive job search if it is an option. If not, God speed my friend.

Talk to him about it and come to a middle ground

OP, where do you work. These are the types of companies I’d love to consult with and take their money to explain to them obvious solutions for performance improvements.

You have to send him 4 emails a day? The horror.
Posted on 4/29/19 at 1:43 pm to LSU6262
Just don't do it. When he asks why explain you were busy doing your f*cking job.

What do you mean? The supervisor wants to see that everyone is checking their email at least every two hours?
Is this a result of something that happened?
Does everyone have double screens? If so, I would imagine most people would have their email up on one screen, but if someone is working on something and they don't check their email on a regular basis, if they don't respond to an important email, I would imagine whoever sent the email would eventually call them to let them know it's something important.

Set up a sharepoint site (or similar) with a spreadsheet that people can update their own totals as the day progresses.
Build a tab to autogenerate graphs and charts and whatnot.
Give the boss read-only access so he doesn't frick it up.
Boss loves your idea, takes it to his boss to implement company-wide and take credit for it initially, but in that activity, he has to come clean that it's all your idea and you are the admin and creator of the site, because he needs you to add the other people as users and build their spreadsheets for them. Then you take your boss's job after they PIP him and RIF him.

I had a boss who tried something similar to this. But he wanted constant updates on goals met. I was a top performer in the company, and I wasn't really interested in having to email this guy every hour when he basically made his quarterly bonus on the back of my work.
I told him this. His response? "I can tell you don't like to be micromanaged."
Oh, you can tell that? Really? Is there anyone on this planet who likes to be micromanaged?
