For the most part people in NOLA are staying home or away from others. I think the initial massive numbers scared the shite out of people. With no tourists, no restaurants, or bars places to gather are limited.

It likely helped. But it is clear as day that this virus attacks those already in high-risk health situations.
I'm not trying to play the "muh underlying conditions" card, but the hospitalization/death rate of those who are even moderately healthy is damn near close to zero.
Seems like this thing gets into the community, attacks the weak, then moves on.

I mean, in the petri dish that is New Orleans, is it out of the realm of possibility it mutated to a less dangerous strain? That's not an uncommon occurrence with diseases. Less infectious/virulent strains get selected for because we quit taking extreme measures to stop their spread if they don't burn through us like wildfire or kill us until we are dead.

Before you get too crazy, in a population the size of Orleans parish, we would expect about 280 deaths per month on average using the overall US death rate. Orleans parish has thus far reported 244 covid-related deaths. So in order for it to not be a significant difference, there would have to be some MAJOR misreporting going on.
