I've struggled with PTSD for going on 10 years now. Posters saying to be his friend through this are exactly right. I went years without anyone to talk to about it and almost took my life. The OT helped me through a rough patch. He needs a friend. Psilocybin microdosing helps a ton, I know several people that do it for PTSD and other mental disorders and they swear by it, along with EMDR therapy. Best of luck to you and your son, and I thank him for his service to this country. Also, frick the VA.

Others may disagree, but the site “better help” might me a good step to take. It’s confidential and from your phone, so if he has too much pride to take that step… it could be easier than searching for a doctor, making an appointment, going into a building, and looking face to face at a person.

Once he knows he can talk about it, maybe it opens up other avenues for treatment.

Buddy of mine battled this and still does, the tough part for many is just asking for help.

VA is still worth another shot here

IMO, the issue with the VA is getting through the front end process. The red tape can be very confusing and VA employees sometimes have surely, disinterested, disengaged, dismissive attitudes. They are unionized so there is no accountability and no incentive from them to do better. I personally haven't fooled much with the VA, but this what I hear from others.

I pray you can get through this and get some help.
My brother-in-law took his own like last month. PTSD from the Army and was a police officer. Left behind a wife and 11yo son. It’s horrific what are family has been through.
Please look into Ketamine assisted therapy. I don’t think MDMA Therapy is available yet but will be a game changer when it is because it will usually cure most PTSD in one treatment for a number of years. Just have to stay on top of it. Hope he cans get some help.

Ditto to the posts mentioning therapy coupled with EMDR. People dealing with PTSD are not “remembering” the traumatic event. The body and brain response is similar to someone who is actually in that stressful event. EMDR by a certified professional can help your son get past the body’s physiological response and allow him to process the therapy.
A great book to read (not an easy read, but I can’t recommend it enough) to help you understand what he’s dealing with is THE BODY KEEPS THE SCORE by Bessel van der Kolk.
I wish your son and your family the very best.

Yes, there are legal clinics in almost every city. This is a decent place to dip a toe into psychedelic-assisted therapy.

It's not terribly hard to find an underground practitioner of merit for MDMA-assisted therapy.

Not sure I agree on the "one treatment" claim you make (it happens sometimes), but the treatment itself is remarkably effective.

Most of all, let him know that as a father you are proud of him for serving our country.

He signed up to serve our country and he behaved nobly. I think some of these issues are because our government and military are so evil and they are asking noble men to do things that we have no business doing. Why are we where we are? Are our service members actually "serving our country"? And if not, how much of THAT realization contributes to the PTSD-like issues.

This is a rough illness. I’ve never had it. I’ve heard there’s a solution to every life’s problems. I don’t know a lot about PTSD. I know time can heal. But moreso I’ve heard weed can help. I’ve also heard dogs can help. I guess don’t be afraid to ask him about it, how’s he’s feeling. Make it known that you don’t know what he’s going through.

Turns out, it was brain damage from firing the artillery...small fissures all throughout the brain caused by repeated, percussive shocks.

There's a big debate going on with what could manifest as PTSD being TBI, particularly in those who have a high operational tempo. A lot of the symptoms can be the same, one doesn't necessarily preclude the other, just another huge issue that could lead to a more complicated diagnosis/treatment plan protocol.

Came here to post this. Get a script for ketamine

Also, this. Ketamine has been instrumental in treating my treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, & Complex PTSD. I get an infusion every other week and take sublingual troches every 3 days in the meantime.

To the OP - If you can find a place near you that does it, the infusions are probably going to be several hundred dollars each, I pay $299ea for mine, which is a steal, but I was also basically the first patient my doctor had for them and he's let me keep the rate, so you could expect to pay $5-650 (on the low end) per infusion. The troches I take every 3 days are inexpensive, pick them up for $50 at a local compound pharmacy.

Ketamine can make a dramatic difference, but it's best not to use solely on it's own. Find a good medication plan that's keeping him better, or at least stable, as the infusion often makes your antidepressant meds work even better.

You usually start with a preset 4-6 (usually 6) treatments, like mine was 3x/week on back to back weeks for 6, to really put yourself on a solid footing mentally and emotionally. You can usually feel a substantial relief in symptoms following one or two sessions, they do tend to work very fast, so that's another pro. You then use the troches, and maintenance infusions as needed, to keep it going.

This is what sucks about life. Learning from other people's pain. Making a kid go fight in a shite hole desert for a shite hole cause and not giving him anything and everything he needs to heal is an atrocity.

I'll break my son's legs the day he's due for MEPs.

Start a go fund me, WingT.

I'll help out. Definitely praying for your boy.

My daughter had terrible disabling PTSD after being assaulted when she has recovering from a bad concussion. She did that light therapy thing called EMDR or something and it completely changed her life. Starting working within weeks. I was skeptical but that’s what her counselor recommended and it’s highly effective with double blind peer reviewed studies etc.

I am not sure they fully understands how it works but it works. My daughter was at the institutional therapy level, I suspect that the incident on top of a concussion is what made it so bad and that is a major factor causing all the PTSD in IRAQ-Afghanistan etc. All those IED attacks cause a concussion on top of seeing your friends killed etc, trauma.

This treatment can be done Zia zoom.

frick the VA they will get you son killed. Get a private doctor and do treatments they are about 200 a month. Then u can find a lawyer or something to hopefully make them pay. I have great insurance but she picked the one doctor that didn’t take it. It’s still a bargain as she is back in school etc.

Emdr light therapy

Hey Wing. I hate hearing your son is having a tough time with PTSD. As others have said, there are a lot of MDMA and Psilocybin trials that are showing great promise.

Smithsonian article on treatments

List of ongoing clinical trials, 2 of which are currently recruiting

It’s an absolute shame how little our bloated government does for veterans who come home after the shite they endured to keep the rest of us safe and having our bullshite first world problems. My after suffered from PATD and was disabled from his time in combat and POW. They gave him a check every month but they just passed him back and forth to “ try “ to help him. Lots of people had it way worse than daddy did and it’s a GD stain on our nation how we deal with veterans.
