I have a Ford Escape from the 2016 model year and I enjoy it.

Those tin cans crumble so the kid doesnt feel the full force of the wreck.

I almost bought a 2004 Escape for $1,800.
So you can make it work.

My wife has a 2012 escape. Changed the oil every 5,000 miles. Not one issue so far. :knock on wood:

Let her get a job, earn the money and then decide which vehicle she wants to pay halves on the insurance, gas, etc.
Then when she uses that vehicle to earn more money to buy a better one.......

The Escape is actually a joint agreemnet between Mazda and Ford. Older models have a timing chain, not a belt. Overall great little SUV for cheap and it should run for over 200k. My sister put 300k on hers before it died. You can't go wrong with that. I looked at one a few years back for $1900. Had about 120k on it. I almost bought it, but the first owner had smoked in it and we test drove it and smelled like ashtrays just riding in it. The guy said he spent almost what he paid for the car in trying to clean it. Nothing would work. So we passed. I bought her a used Kia Soul+, that car is great and CR rates them very high for their market.

Check the IIHS website for the safety report for that vehicle.
Not stellar IIRC.

Have nothing to add except you're right for getting a brand new car for a new driver.
Almost everyone I know wrecked their first car at some point. Also, you gotta crawl before you ball. Everyone should experience a POS car in their life.
I'd also recommend teaching her to appreciate it by making her pay you for it monthly. Then after it's "paid off", give her the money back for a down payment on a better car.

Why does he have any say? should be happy that he's even getting a car
The OP did mention she in his post, but that really doesn't matter.
I had 2 stepkids that got hand me downs and they had no say in what they got. They were just grateful to have wheels, and I'd hope the OP's daughter would too, and not pout about not getting what she "really wanted".
You just know they are going to screw it up sometime in the first year or so in some fashion.
