Used Escape will be a lot cheaper than a comparable used CR-V or RAV-4.

What about a used Santa Fe or Tuscon?

As far as a Ford Escape, my parents bought me one when I was 18.

I totaled it twice before I was 21 and walked away from both accidents scratch free.

The escape is a sturdy, safe vehicle.

I have no comment about the price you want to spend for a 16 year old. I understand both sides of the argument. My parents bought me the new car and I wrecked it twice in 3 years, some would say I shoulda got a clunker to frick up. The other side to that argument is that maybe I get hurt in one of those wrecks if I didn’t have a nice, safe vehicle.

The ford escape falls apart after 120k. Badly.

Get her a 1.5 generation xterra and tell her tough tits. You can typically get them for under 3k with 130k miles or so. Under 5k for 4x4. Do a timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and new radiator for 1k and you have something she can drive until she finishes college and it will NEVER leave her stranded.

Bulletproof, cheap to insure, and make her pay for gas (gas mileage isn't great so you can stop her from driving everywhere slutting it up)

Coronas were awesome. My parents had an '80 model. First car I ever saw with an outdoor thermometer.

The first car my wife and I had after we were married was a piece of shite 1976 Corona, mustard yellow. It had a good engine in it though and got us from point A to point B with no problems. Had it for two years, and made us appreciate the new car we got much more!

Have you kid drive a POS hand me down for a year or so to make sure they are a good, responsible driver before you get something more expensive. My oldest will be getting his license next year and he is getting his grandpa's old rice burner for awhile to prove to me he is a good driver.

Get an older suburban so when she’s texting and driving and hits something it won’t crumble like a little tin can.
