My Xterra was my first car (got it at 16), and I’m still driving it 10 years later with minimal repairs required. It’s a great car.
CAD, I’ll sell you mine for $5k

This. You should have no problem getting a safe, reliable vehicle under $5,000.
Is this a joke? Anything under 5k is going to be old as dirt and well worn. Safe maybe, but reliable is going to be hard as hell without putting in significant effort.

I don't think is true. Cars last allot longer these days and there's a billion used cars under 5k.
Eta I'm looking at a 2011 escape in great condition with 88k miles for 4200 as we speak.

Get him a piece of junk under $8000 and tell him to be happy he has anything at all. He’s just gonna wreck whatever car you get him anyway

My first car cost $600.
POS but I loved it.

More seats in the car leads to more people to distract a young driver. I'm with a few others and would look at a Tacoma or other small pickup. Besides do you really want your young daughter to have a back seat?

or.....the option of your kid not being a spoiled brat and work for his first car....there's an idea

i knew there would be one like you in this thread.
if you actually had kids, you would know you end up helping them out regardless. sorry i'm not 'ot perfect' and helped my kid out so she could afford a nicer car than what she had saved in the bank.

Have kids and they work for everything they got....I'm sure you're saving for there college too while they go out to Fred's everynight looking for bbc.

Maybe buy the kid a Caddy....i hear those are nice for teenagers....great safety ratings and just a smudge in budget.

2009+ are all good safety-wise, prior to 2008 only average ratings.
Good luck and teach her to not be distracted when driving. Just lost a 16 YO girl and her mom in my area due to distracted driving.

Used civic. It will run until they are ready for a nicer car or until the fender bender they will surely have

Early 00’s Escapes can be had on the cheap. My buddy had an 01 and just sold it with 220K on the clock. Thing was literally falling apart but made it through two Detroit winters.
You can’t go wrong with a beater Accord or Camry either. Civic/Corolla are too small in the event of the inevitable collision.

she texted me earlier this week and said 'i'm driving on the interstate while texting!!'
turns out the driving class actually has a simulator where they make a game out of seeing how long the kids stay 'alive' while texting and driving .

i feel like these are cop-magnets. every one i see on the road around here has japanese stickers on it or an aftermarket muffler. i think cops go after these more for that reason.

3rd gen 4runner, 1996-2002, but I would stick with 1999-2002. If you can find one with under 200K miles, should last awhile with a little PM. Owned a 1998 that had over 230K on orignal engine and transmission, sold that only bc I found a deal on a 2002 with 91K.

Civic, accord, corolla and Camry should be the only options
