My first car was a salvage from the insurance company. Paid $300 for it and put about 30k miles on it before my mom drove it and set it on fire because it was a Ford and liked to overheat from time to time... Great first car because it worked well for the most part
My kids first car will be something similar.

Something safe and cheap to insure like a Sante Fe or an Escape isn't a bad idea.

It's small so it shouldn't cost much for her, plus women get lower rates!

The Nissan 3.3 motor does not get enough credit.
Quality product.

I'm telling you, I've only had to replace two small parts on this thing in the last 10 years of owning it. It has been a great car for me, and it was an awesome first car. I'm now ready to move on to a newer car, but tbh I am tempted to run this one into the ground since I've had such little trouble with it. It has 130k miles on it, so it still has some years left.

Buy the kid a used car and tell him he needs to take care of it to be able to get a new one.
It boggles my mind how parents will buy their kids a brand new, $25-65k vehicle and they go and wreck it within months.
Don’t be that parent. Make them earn it. Buy him a beater Buick.

Is it 4x4?
With 130k on it, I may be interested if cad isn't

Unfortunately, it's not a 4x4. It also doesn't have an aux plug or tape player, so I still have to burn CDs.
The biggest thing I love about my car is how the seats fold down all the way and there's just massive trunk space. I can haul anything in it.

we are looking at a budget of $15k or less but based on safety.
the rub is that it will be a house "pool" vehicle they can use.....
the current target is an FJ Cruiser, but damn! They are like collectables right now.

2010 to 2015 xterra or 03-12 4runner is in that range and extremely safe.

You get what you pay for. And if that’s what you pay for, you’re going to get a hunk of shite.

Find a late 90s to mid 2000s Lexus. I just bought one for $2500 and it was the best deal I think i will ever get. It’s like driving a Toyota but you don’t have to admit to driving one, because it’s not one. But at the same time, it is, and that is very good. Plus it is much more insulated
