What’s happening in the legal market right now is insane, and it has happened suddenly. Paralegals are getting offers for more than young lawyers were making only a few years ago. What annoyed me today was that she got this offer last week and never gave me a heads up to even try to match it
I'll say this again. If it was only about the money, she would have given you a chance to match it.
If she did not... then I'm sure she will appreciate the money, but other things are a factor as well.

So she hated working for you.

From now on I am treating everyone as chattel.
Let us know how that works out for you, Mr Serf.

I don’t control what one person makes. I have a bunch of partners who all have different opinions on what to pay someone, or what someone is worth. I have fought for raises for everyone on my team for years. My secretary has been with me 20 years.

I’m going to try to get as much as I can, but I have to herd some cats first. If it doesn’t happen, I’ll move on and figure it out.
I believe it.
Wage inflation is a bitch. It is like fision energy. It grows upon itself.
It will take a nasty recession to put the brakes on it.

One of two things
She wants to leave
She is last minute applying pressure to force you to match because of timeframe.
You are correct, EVERYONE in the office will be lined up for a raise if she ends up staying. She be bragging that you all buckled.

The OP lives on the West Bank.
He’s a pretend fancy lawyer.
I heard he got caught with a secretary in a parking garage one time. That was just a rumor so you never know.

Plot twist: his assistant was his wife.

Maybe there are other factors that make the job a better fit and the money is just icing on the cake?

Dude the fact that you are calling a 14% raise not 'dramatic life changing money' kinda shows how much of a twat you are. You know how much they make....add 14% to that and figure out what they could do with that money. Perhaps they could have told you...perhaps you could be a stronger voice to your 'partners' about giving out raises.
Also do you offer anything that the next job doesn't/can't?
You said that you (I'm sure you will blame your partners) have put prohibitions on talking about pay (illegal by the way).... between that and the lack of understanding how a raise could benefit someone.... you should either be a better boss or get used to hiring assistants every so often from here on out.

You can't offer a 14 percent raise to match someone who has been with you for 10 years? Sounds like you already treat people like shite.

Cost of living has gone up.
I cannot blame anyone for bettering their Situation.

I guarantee she's been looking for something else longer than a week.

quote:I don't think you quite understand how big a difference that can make to someone who might barely be making ends meet. It could be the difference between saving $100/month and saving $1,000/month. The cost of living is the line below which debt accumulates and above which wealth accumulates. If your income is far below it or far above it, 14% might not be a huge deal. If you're right around it, 14% is huge.
Not dramatic life changing money. Basically a 14% raise.
quote:So it's "not dramatic" but you can't find it?
I could probably come up with something to offer her, but I can't match it.

When was the last time you gave her a raise?

You sound like a bitch. Cost of living is up a shite load. The 14% raise is probably necessary. You should be happy for your former employee, not bitter.

It's not a shakedown when you don't even ask for a counter. It is a statement that the workplace and the immediate boss are the problem.

Us “boomers” you talk so bad about grew up in the Great Depression and learned how to get by with less. You know, back in the day when people helped each other and didn’t look at their phones on the tick tack all day
Then OP should have no problem helping his assistant by paying her more and getting by with less himself.
