frick relationships. It's all about the Hamiltons. From now on I am treating everyone as chattel.
It goes both ways tho. Companies don’t give a shite about loyalty either. Everyone is expendable now.

Companies don’t have unlimited dollars for payroll. A company’s number 1 goal is to profit. It’s business. You show your loyalty by treating the employee like a valued person.
What a crock of horseshite. If one of your competitors offers me more money than you are and you aren't willing to match it, it tells me all I need to know about how you feel about me as an employee.
Employees have to constantly job hop every few years now to maximize their earning potential because companies always pay external hires more than they would pay an internal hire for the same position.

Haven't read through the entire topic but did you counter at all? 10% raise and an extra day off per month or something like that?

You are 100% right, frick ‘em. She needed more money, she should have scheduled a meeting and talked to you about it.

quote:One of the funniest things you always hear Manager types say, "This place wouldn't be able to function without me."
I am training some of my people for their next job.
Others, I will do whatever in my power to keep.
That's, um, management.
And they say that thinking it's because they're so good at their job, but that's a huge red flag and basically an admission that you really suck at your job.
If you're truly a good manager/leader of a department, you should ensure your staff and department can run perfectly fine if you're not there. It's your job to do just that. The department falls apart without you? Lovely, WTF have you been doing the past 2 years to fix that and get your employees up to speed...sounds like not a whole lot.

I question your breadth of experience to be able to make such a blanket statement.
shite would fall apart quick without my managers in my company and profession. They have actual duties that those below them can't do, and the amount of responsibility each manager has would be too much for the smaller group of those above them, who also have specific duties that are unique to the role.
Maybe in the organizations you were a part of there were useless roles, but not every organization does it like that. Most managers aren't just sitting there watching shite get done, despite what those below them feel.

Not dramatic life changing money. Basically a 14% raise. I could probably come up with something to offer her, but I can't match it.
If she's an assistant, with cost of everything going up, that 14% is "life changing". Or at least life sustaining.

frick anyone who thinks it shouldn't be about getting paid a wage where you can live comfortably.
