The Little Mermaid” is being criticized by a prominent diversity advocate for its erasure of slavery in the Caribbean.
quote:
Marcus Ryder, an influential British campaigner and chair of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, applauded the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel — but took issue with how the movie showcased racial harmony.

However, in the blog, titled “Disney’s the Little Mermaid, Caribbean Slavery, and Telling the Truth to Children,” Ryder points out that the movie appears to take place in the Caribbean in the 18th century during a time of African chattel slavery — yet the islanders depicted in the film seem to live in a world free of this inhumanity.
quote:
In this setting, I do not think we do our children any favors by pretending that slavery didn’t exist,” he wrote. “For me Disney’s preference to try and wish the inconvenient truth away says more about the adult creatives than it does about children’s ability to work through it.”
Though he acknowledged that the movie is a fantasy and doesn’t necessarily need to be historically accurate, he said that Disney shouldn’t be “encouraging historical amnesia.”

It's really not the minorities pushing this, it's the guilty left for suppressing the minorities for decades.

Yeah. She should have been lynched as soon as she stepped out of the water.

Because it's a fricking musical kids movie about a mermaid, not a history class

It's a movie for kids. While slavery is an important topic in history, can we not just let kids be kids and let them enjoy a kids movie that is supposed to be fun?
I mean, we're talking about a fiction movie about mythical mermaids, not a history documentary.

What a bunch of miserable fricks.

I gained inner peace when I came to realize there is no version of any functional society that has ever existed or can ever exist where these people would find themselves happy. They have decided to adopt a set of values that ensures they are perpetually miserable.

Retards everywhere.

There's enough slavery movies already. In fictional movies like this, I'd love to see even more movie depicting black people doing literally anything else beside being slaves.

Feminists are hitting the movie as well... Ariel don't need no man!

a movie about mermaids and singing crabs didn't have a completely accurate representation of history
wow, what a shame
this article is rage bait, don't fall for this shite

I wonder how people would react to a "Little Mermaid" movie that closely reproduces the actual original story. It doesn't have a happy ending and there is no singing.

It's completely unacceptable for a story about a mythical woman-fish hybrid and her Sea King father to not to accurately portray slavery during the period

The white liberals will never learn.
These people (race baiters) don’t want equality. They want revenge.
