Should have been a vote for permanent standard time.

DST year round, yes please. The more daylight after work the better.

Kids don't walk to school anymore, what hole have you guys been living in? This isn't the 1980s anymore.

All I know is driving to work in the dark and leaving work in the dark during the winter sucks.

But what about my one ultra specific anecdote as to why its a bad idea?

Why do the time zone lines not follow state lines and some of them zig and zag through states? I’ve always wondered that never figured it out.

Tell me when have they ever voted against it. A quick search told me ZERO.

The Senate passed a bill in 2022 but the house didn't even take it up.

Pretty sure almost everywhere that has tried permanent DST it hasnt worked , it almost always gets reversed, including here….

Meanwhile, permanent standard time has worked and stuck everywhere that has tried it

Almost all studies point to permanent standard time being better as well. Makes sense our congress would chose the opposite

Good point

The center of population has shifted

Might not seem like a huge shift on the surface but the shift clearly shows that western and southern growth is dominating

How do they handle it in Alaska when the sun is only up for a couple of hours or less in the winter?

The kids will be fine.

Probably not a great example given the high levels of alcoholism, substance use, and depression in that population.

Yeh it just seems simple. It’s pretty clear with evidence that standard time is better. What the hell was the reason they went with DST? Just to “yolo”?

True but I don't think the kids are drinking at the bus stop. I am commenting on the people worried about the kids in the dark.

I'm pretty sure Arizona has permanent standard time and has kept it successfully since the 60s.

I think most people are good with a solution that keeps the clock from changing twice a year.

The disagreement is whether you keep Daylight Saving or Standard. I'm firmly in the Standard camp. But I'm also in the city that will have a 9:00 am sunrise with DST in the winter.

I’m fairly certain permanent standard time has a 100% success rate and permanent DST is like 45%

Showing both Austin and Dallas in Texas is completely unnecessary.

Did they give a reason at all why they picked DST over standard time?

They already are. Some kids get picked up before 6 am

It's the "pizza for lunch every day" and "no homework" 4th grade class president campaign promise that appeals on the very surface level to the masses. But, when some critical thought is applied it doesn't sound as great.

Yes, when it is warm, in July, and you are having fun outside until 8:30 pm you ask "why don't we do this year round?!". But then, once you take a second to think that the amount of daylight in the winter gets shorter regardless of what time system you apply, then the bump of sunset from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, during the coldest part of the year, doesn't sound as great when it comes with a corresponding change that it remains dark until 8:00 am - 9:00 am.

While I like standard time, I think the way we have it now is just fine. In the spring, summer and (most of) fall we have "longer" days. In the winter we make a trade to have an "earlier" sunrise. IMO, that is a reasonable compromise
