WTF Universe!? We can’t even go outside on under a clear, blue sky?

That is awful. But it is a freak accident. How many millions of people have stayed in the water when a thunderstorm is in the "far" distance?

I'm staying indoors this summer...

I feel for the bride... what a terrible thing for her to go through.

In high school marching band we had a lightning strike the parking lot less than a block away from us while we were practicing. Band director was being an a-hole making us stay out there seeing the storm coming. When it struck he changed his tune real quick. You could feel the electricity with it being so close. Felt like a very brief 120 shock.

you do see how this is a reversal of cause and effect logic though right? Effect always follows cause, but effect does not always define cause. You’ve predetermined the cause by witnessing the effect

I admit I’ve never heard of this terrifying phenomenon.

So they’re saying that, under a clear blue sky with no clouds above, but up to 20 miles away from storm clouds, there can be lightning strikes? Maybe this is just me being ignorant, but I have never heard of lightning strikes without clouds.

This is just so fricking tragic.

It can arch from the storm to 20 miles or more away.

I saw a bolt travel from the leading edge of a storm to a power substation at least 15 miles away knocking out power to a town south of us. I had never realized it could travel so far away until seeing that.

Not just swimming either. I was out in my garden late yesterday afternoon picking okra when a light rain started. About halfway through there was a lightning strike that was so close there was no warning. I had to have been within a block or so of me.

I got out the garden and went inside after it scared the crap out of me being so close. I'd hate for my wife to come home and find me lying between the rows smoldering after getting hit by something like that.

RIP to the young groom and condolences to his widow. Sad way to go out at such a young age.
