Man arrested for stealing car he bought. How he keeps his cool is beyond me.

On June 21, 2025, he bought a slightly used 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X in Thunderstorm Gray from Doral Volkswagen. He put down $15,000, traded in a 2012 Ford Focus, and financed the remainder of the $61,230 purchase price through the dealer. The dealership took a photo of him with his new truck. A salesperson texted him later to wish him well.
The vehicle's finance manager had made an error during the paperwork, entering an incorrect VIN – a mistake Sprague had no knowledge of. In the dealership's system, the Sierra had never been sold – but it also wasn't on the lot. The dealer reported it stolen and activated its LoJack tracker. Sprague had not consented to the installation of a tracking device – a detail carrying unusual weight given his background. His position overseeing aircraft operated by senior government officials requires a top-secret security clearance, and that clearance bars him from having tracking devices on his personal vehicles.

Instead of doing a QA/QC on their submittal, the stealership preemtively activates Lojack. Despite the ads you see on local TV, the underlying message with the company is stealership good, customer bad. Hope the guy doesn't get any service work there.

This seems like it could’ve been fairly easily avoidable if people involved used common sense.

Ramming a stolen vehicle you’re trying to recover doesn’t make sense to me kind of like shooting someone so they don’t commit suicide.

He keeps his cool because he is a responsible disciplined individual with more to lose by acting foolish and understands consequences and that belligerence will worsen & prolong the situation.
He knows he's innocent and if he loses his cool could face career derailing charges.
Side note: I'll never understand the folks that claim to be deathly afraid of police yet react by escalating situation and being confrontational.

Odd that when an inventory discrepancy pops up instead of looking around and asking the sales staff about a particular vehicle ( i assume the salesperson who is currently texting the buyer would remember that he just sold this particular vehicle that's missing) you immediately activate the lojack and call the cops

Doral VW gave him his money back. I don't know what they did with the trade in. I guess they gave back that as well. they tried to get him to go thru arbitration to resolve it. He sued them for $50k.

I think about all of the smart people I know, and none of them are in law enforcement. I think we always think about detectives as these guys that are depicted as smart and diligent and passionate about their jobs, but in reality most as probably the ones slightly sharper than the other goons running around as beat cops. All that said, I’m guessing what being a cop has turned into is an unbelievably difficult job with danger and BS that far outweighs the compensation, so it’s not surprising with the types of folks that end up doing it
