And most of them are concentrated in the Deep South (or rather the black belt which stretches from Baltimore to Houston) and a few other allocated city slums like Chicago, Philly, etc. Half of the states have fewer than 10% black population and it's probably about 80% of the counties.

The NYC stat is deceiving, as there are roughly 30MM people in the NYC area, roughly 10% of the US population.

It's even more than that. 30 states have 10% or fewer. 20 of those states have 5% or fewer.
It's why the TV racial representation is insanity, they portray a reality that is so far from what the vast majority of people live, it's absurd.

I worked with a young black man in New Orleans. He was very intelligent and had been accepted to dental school, last I heard. We talked about race stuff a lot. He got a summer internship in Idaho and had some interesting things to say when he came back. First, there almost no blacks where he went in Idaho so he hung out with Indians. Next, he said he thought the entire country was like New Orleans demographically so he never understood why white people held so much power.

my wife was about to throw a racist card at me the other day because a commercial had a black woman and asian husband. i commented that was a statistical anomaly.
she thought i was commenting about the over-prevalence of mixed raced marriages in a commercials. which is real and it's stupid but i don't actually care, i just notice.
she was prepared to tear into me when i was just saying that of interracial marriages, an asian man and black woman is almost unheard of. i just thought it was a weird representation.
then she backed off.
