The out of town dealer was first to respond and I got the deal that I wanted and started the process, got loan approval and all of the paperwork ready, all I have to do is go get it.
They probably didn't want to deal with an unscrupulous POS who didn't negotiate in good faith with the other dealership.

The out of town dealership was willing to take a lower GP margin to win the deal than the local one.
It’s as simple as that.

They determined they can sell their product for more than you were offering. Seems pretty obvious. Glad to see the Free Market in action.
When factoring in the better price, did you account for the expenses of gas and time traveling to pick up the out of town car?
We used to have a Honda dealer in Key Largo that would undercut all of the Honda dealers in Miami-Dade and Broward counties AND deliver the car too you. I have no idea where they stored their inventory and where those vehicles were delivered from but I just assumed that they were able to undercut the competition because of lower overhead.

Car dealerships are trying to be the lowest in a particular area so they are taking into account that most buyers aren’t willing or savvy enough to look elsewhere. I’ve purchased our last four cars in both Dallas and Houston. On my son’s truck, the price I got in Dallas was $6k less compared to BR, NOLA and Lafayette. Same exact truck, same mileage, year, accessories, etc
One way flight to Dallas for about $150 and the overall title and registration process back where I live was a breeze.

I am in market. I am buying out of state. In LA, there is a $3k dealer add on.
Supply/demand wins (for both sides)!
Your silver platter is silver.
The customer right behind you is gold platter.
Keep going out of state, lowering LA demand, and platters start to look different.

Buying a new car today is a bad idea. They literally are almost all junk when you drive them off the lot.

Sounds like pricing discipline to me. Good for them.

Presume you mean depreciation.
We buy new and drive them until they die. Useful life when we are done is near zero. Depreciation is not meaningful to us.
Pre owned prices are high. There is no depreciation price discount in them. Just is not.
So, when indifferent and drive til they die, new it is.

Local service will ne fun, too.
If you are paying for service at the local dealership, why are you trying to lowball the purchase?
Might as well take it up the arse twice.

Describe the vehicle and tell us the price difference.

Depends on the vehicle and the demand for it.
If you bought a high demand vehicle dealers who move a lot of inventory want more profit.
On the other hand some cars aren't selling at all and dealers will work great deals.

Has a similar experience recently but I got the deal. Had to show the dealer in my town whom I bought 2 vehicles with prior a deal 1hr away for the same truck just upgraded paint. I was about to walk over 2k and they matched the price to keep me there. I bought a 7yr/100k Mile warranty and financed with them and told them there’s no reason they can’t come down 2 more thousand to make it 10k off msrp if they are making money off financing and warranties. I also bought a truck from them in 2018 for 40k, traded it in for 27k last week. Thought I did pretty good on that. I’m sure they made money and I don’t want them to not make money. Just wanted a fair deal and honesty.

Quit buying junk cars!

They will sell that vehicle in the next month for more money. Buyers just finance and all they look at is the monthly note.

Opposite but similar deal recently selling a car.
Took it to the dealership and they offered me $21.5k for the car. Called a dealership across state lines, but only 30 miles away. The out of town dealer offered $30.5k.
Made it pretty easy on who I was selling the car too.

I had the same issue with Acura Baton Rouge versus Houston
I had the exact opposite experience with them.
Had prices from Houston to Mobile. They matched my best price and I picked it up the next day.
