I found 2 exact vehicles at a local dealership and an out of town dealership and began negotiating price. The out of town dealer was first to respond and I got the deal that I wanted and started the process, got loan approval and all of the paperwork ready, all I have to do is go get it.

I decided to call the local dealership and told them of my pending purchase and said I preferred to buy from them, because they are in the town I live. I gave them a copy of my pending deal, all of the numbers and showed them everything they asked for. All they had to do was give me the same deal, but they wouldn’t not do it.

I wonder why? It’s an easy sale, done deal…seems strange to me that a local dealership would let me go like this.

Anybody in the car business have any insight?

Louisiana dealers won't negotiate nearly as much because there's someone right behind you waiting to pay full sticker and will be happy about it.

Maybe because the out of town dealer knew the only way to get your business was to lowball the shite out of you, knowing you'd take it to your local dealer and they only way they'd be able to win there was to take a stinker of a deal and your local dealer didn't want to deal with the bullshite?

They determined they can sell their product for more than you were offering. Seems pretty obvious. Glad to see the Free Market in action.

When factoring in the better price, did you account for the expenses of gas and time traveling to pick up the out of town car?

Probably a volume thing. I had the same issue with Acura Baton Rouge versus Houston

If they don’t sell the car today, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they call you Monday with a better deal than would they offered you.

Have done the same with the same reaction.

The local dealer said "I will get the price I am asking, but you got a good deal"

Because the local dealership, fairly, assessed that you were going to take that local offer to the other dealership and ask for a lower cost. Then you come back to the local dealer, and the process continues.

If we don't want games in the car buying process, buyers cannot play them either.

Same thing only reversed, left Houston to buy in BTR. But in BTR, my friend owns the dealership.

I’ve bought 11 vehicles in the last 10 years. 9 of them were bought out of state. Local dealers suck.

clearly they think it's strange you wouldn't pay what they were asking. maybe they paid more for the vehicle than the out of state dealer.

Honestly, who cares? This is why you contacted multiple dealers is the first place right? To get the best deal. You got that, so go get your car from out of town. If buying in town was so important to you then you would not have shopped around. No need to waste any energy trying to understand how stupid a car dealer can be.

Inventory on cars isn’t near what it used to be. If they have something on the lot, there is a much better chance they sell it than someone having to order something. They also know it’s a hassle to drive out of state and then come back here and register it. You have to weigh that headache with buying local. Most people are spending 60k+ on a vehicle but will drive out of state to “save $500-1k”

Now if it’s Baton Rouge vs New Orleans or Hammond, I would be surprised that they wouldn’t match.

They also know if they advertise the low price you are trying to get them to match, they could sell it within the week.

A lot of it has to do with how bad the local dealer needs to move vehicles and how long the vehicle has been sitting on the lot.

Also, if it's a high in-demand vehicle, like a Toyota, Honda...there is not going to be as much negotiating room.

The best time to buy a vehicle is at the end of the month/quarter or better yet toward the end of the year.

Sales goals, bonus', quotas are trying to be met. Sometimes they need just one more vehicle to sell to met their sales goals.

The dealer may be willing to let the vehicle go at a low price just to met those goals.
