"Life after college did not go as Ashley Dreahn planned." that might be understating it.

quote:
Dreahn enrolled at Texas Woman's University in 2004 as the first in her family to go to college. She cobbled together jobs, babysitting and working at a call center and an automotive shop. But she still needed to borrow heavily.
Earned a degree in history with an emphasis on education and social studies
She got a degree to become a social studies teacher but she realized that wasn't for her. So she went back to school and got a higher paying job in the chemical processing industry.
quote:
While teaching, she took out more student loans to earn a pair of associate degrees from a public community college in Texas. In hopes of landing a higher-paying job in the chemical processing industry.
Unfortunately that job offer was rescinded because she was too heavy. She was over the weight limit for the company's safety equipment.
quote:
She filed for bankruptcy in 2022 in hopes that it would "erase everything."
As a pandemic relief measure, the federal government allowed borrowers to suspend student loan payments until 2023, and President Joe Biden's administration then provided a one-year grace period. That ended in fall 2024, allowing loans to enter into default after nine months of missed payments.
Student loans are rarely discharged in bankruptcy. Borrowers must prove the loans pose an "undue hardship."
But Dreahn didn't know any of that.
She files for bankruptcy, Biden suspends student loan payments, she thinks she it debt free. Moves into a RV park so she can save up money for weight loss surgery.
quote:
She found work at a Texas prison and was rebuilding her life, saving up for weight-loss surgery, when this spring she heard from a credit-monitoring service. The student loans she thought had been discharged in bankruptcy had ballooned to $94,298 with interest, and she had to start making payments. She was in default.
She works in a prison, because she is too fat for a dream job, lives in a trailer park, bankrupt, and owes the government 95K.
"That was a six-figure career that I lost due to my weight," she said, her voice breaking. "The money that I'm trying to save now that was going to be for surgery is going to be paid to student loans instead."
Life choices

I find it extremely difficult to believe that no one along the way informed her that student loans cannot be released via bankruptcy, in fact I find it damn near impossible

She signed a contract that has to be paid back to the Federal Government. Weight loss surgery is not mandatory. Dreahn made some poor choices in life.

By the end of 2026 Ashley will be pregnant with Tyron's 7th child by 7 different baby mommas that live in the RV Park.
Ty doesn't care about weight.

I bet she's also single because she'll only date men over 6', blue eyes, making 150K+ and drives a European sports car.

I tried to find her. She filmed a tornado in her RV park and it got picked up by the news but other than that, she's a ghost online.
Edited! Found her, and she's fat!

Dude, these people thought they would be resolved of everything when they were "handing" out all those free promises. I know one personally who thought her 4 years of college loans were just going to vanish. Hell, she even bought a new Mercedes because she didnt have student loans anymore
People believe what they want to believe and they were handed some serious bullshite. Its no different than the people sitting around waiting on reparations. Good luck with that.

College is expensive. Too expensive.
But... someone has to pay for it and it should be the person going to college and not the taxpayers who are not enrolled.
Good for her for going for social studies. She had a bad break when she figured out she didn't like it, but that's life.
As far as her being overweight, I do not blame her at all. Everyone should have the opportunity to try for a job they want. However... if a business requires physical standards to be able to do the job, it's not the business' fault and it sucks for the person who doesn't fit the standards, but that's the way it is.
In conclusion, I don't think she really did anything wrong (except maybe going back for a second degree if that cost a lot) and I don't blame her.
Her path didn't work out. That's life. Sucks for her.
