It is not just what you are hearing prior to taking out a student loan. I can understand that being somewhat predatory, even still im sure she received the info.
But she went through the entire bankruptcy process, you are talking extensive debt mapping and a process that includes debt education and counseling courses before even being able to file

Some of the people they quote in the article aren't rocket scientist, but they have to go out of the way to be this ignorant.
Even thought she wasn't paying anything, she thought her balance would be forgiven, but actually owes 20K a year for 10 years.

Does the student loan industry suck? Absolutely! The industry and colleges prey on vulnerable people.
At the same time, a college student should be smart to do basic math. If they aren't, college isn't for them.
I came from a poor family and was a first generation college student. My parents basically kicked me out at 18 so I had no choice but to live in student housing. I remember my mom telling me to just borrow money because I would be able to pay it off after college. I told her that was stupid because I wasn't guaranteed a good job. I went to the school that gave me the most money, worked multiple jobs, and was dirt poor through school. I managed to graduate with only 8k in loans that I paid off as quickly as possible.
College doesn't have to cost 100k! I live in TN and community college is free for students. The unfashionable state schools (which are great schools) have tuition of about 11k a year without financial aid. There are so many options!

College is expensive BECAUSE (in large part) government backed student loans. If you are a business whose "customers" can get a loan, regardless of financial status, credit history, etc, allowing you to get paid in full regardless of if you fully deliver your service/product (i.e. the customer graduates) why wouldn't you continue to raise the price of your goods/services? There's no risk and no real competitive marketplace because the government makes sure you (the college) gets paid in full even if the loan holder can't pay back the lender/government.

There are a LOT of people who perform jobs every day that they don't particularly "like". But they do so to support their lifestyle...whatever that may be. Digging hole of financial debt until you find something you like is not a sound financial plan. As to the being too fat to work, that's 100% on her. (1) It's not all that difficult to investigate the job requirements prior to trying to obtain a job and (2) being obese is NOT mandatory. It is a choice.
