re: Let's Check in on the California Ocean Front Rebuild

My co-worker is from the Palisades and his family still lives there. They aren't letting them rebuild without going through insane red tape and the cost to build with "new" California building codes that weren't around when the original houses were there is completely cost prohibitive.

Insurance companies are also fighting tooth and nail over payments.

He thinks California wants to turn big areas into rent controlled, sort-of Section 8 style residences, which if you ever went to the Palisades before you would know that's absurd. It's one of the nicest areas in the country.

His mother lost her home, which was her father's. They want to rebuild the exact same, but it just can't happen. Haven't even broken ground. And these are wealthy people that can't get it done.

Also, my co-worker is a big GOP guy and said the whole area in the Palisades is red, sort of like Newport. Adds to his conspiracy theory. He still has a Spencer Pratt sign in his yard in East Tennessee

City officials view this disaster as an opportunity to redistribute land and wealth to the masses. They will utilize the bureaucracy to its fullest extent to accomplish this.

They had severe mold in their house due to a sewer leak under their house (totally unrelated to the fires). They've been living in a $5k per month rent house since January and they haven't even been able to submit for a permit to the county yet. I met Gates McFadden - Dr Crusher from Star Trek - at the fan expo last year. Nice lady. When she found out I worked in construction, she went into this long story about how difficult permitting was in LA, and how she got so frustrated she's been paying people under the table to do some renovation work at her Los Angeles home. And that she only does these meet and greets to get a source of untraceable income she can use to pay the contractors.

So if your home burned down and the town said you could not rebuild you would be cool with it?

I have a client who's house luckliy "survived" the Palisades fire but is still unlivable as it needs remediation. He and his family have been renting a condo since and have no timeline of return. I visited there a couple of times, and man that view from the back patio was fricking epic. I hate it for them. Can confirm that is a red community.
