I'm sure this Russian surgeon will not be drunk on the job like the surgeon who performed Natalia Ramius's appendectomy.
It’s standard operating procedure to have a couple of vodka doubles to steady the nerves prior to surgery in Russia

The Russians are having serious supply issues, and simultaneously carrying out heavy shelling of Ukrainian forces in the Donbas, night and day.
He’s selling you Kool Aid.
The only person drinking Kool Aid is you. The Russians have millions upon millions of artillery rounds left over from the cold war and the fronts where Russia is able to shell day and night are Kharkiv and Severedonetsk? Why couldn't the Russians shell Kyiv or Mykolaiv into submission? Why can't the Russians prevent the Ukrainians from slowly but steadily back to Kherson?
I will tell you why (a good Russophile like yourself will appreciate how I imitated Putin and answer my own questions). The Russian's road and rail network uses Moscow like a hub. That means Russia cannot ship weapons from its weapons depos and factories in the Russian interior without going to Moscow first. That is no big deal for the fight in the Donbas because the front is less than 100 km from cities that have direct rail lines to Moscow and are all less than 1000 kms from Moscow. However, the Russian supply lines from Moscow to the fighting on the southern front are approximately 2000 km and require scheduling trains on different lines or having drivers use multiple highways. The Russian supply lines to the Kyiv front were 1200 kms and had to be routed through Belarus. Anytime Russia's supply lines get over 1000 kms from their road and rail hubs of Moscow or don't have a straight line from Moscow to the front the Russians run into trouble.
Of course, one could argue that Russia has run into trouble when their supply lines are less than 1000 kms from Moscow since their offensive in the Donbas has moved the front less than 50 kms over the past 2 weeks.

Yea that's good stuff. Amazing that in the 2020's other countries are just now fielding planes that can compete with the Eagle which was designed in the 60's, and that's only if they're have a good driver.
Not to mention if it ever did get really hot, we can actually field and sustain the f22 in the fight. Russia/China MIGHT be able to field a handful of SU57 or whatever that Chinese thing is for a week before they run out of parts and knowledge base to keep them all up.

Exactly. Not only is our engineering itself superior, but we actually have enough parts/mechanics to sustain our stuff. Real life isn’t like Ace Combat where some random banana republic suddenly pulls a highly trained squadron of 10th gen fighters outta their arse.

Motherfrickers slinging Black Mages now. Wonder how they handle fight mechanics while keeping those BM baws in Ley Lines.
Sorry for the FFXIV nerd reference.

Defense Officials Hold Media Brief on the Training of Ukrainian Military
May 4, 2022
Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby; Brigadier General Joseph Hilbert, Commanding General, 7th Army Training Command, EUCOM; Lieutenant Colonel Todd Hopkins, Chief of Staff
Excerpt...
Most already have a more than adequate -- they even have an advanced understanding of Hill artillery, making these very quick and very focused training efforts. They are absolutely focused at the task at hand and getting back to Ukraine.
Just as an example of that, a couple of days ago during one of the lunch breaks, one of the Ukrainian soldiers received word from his -- from hometown -- his hometown that his hometown was being shelled.
He and his team immediately stopped what they were doing and stopped eating at their lunch and went back to training knowing that that was how that they were going to go back and support their homeland.
So just as a personal note, I can't -- I can't say anymore what an honor and a privilege it is for us to be supporting these amazing worriers defending their nation.

To be fair that interview is about 10 years old.

The last Brits I worked with commented that they expected our actual capabilities to be a good twenty years further ahead than we had in operation.
Cheeky bastards was the term most applied to us.
I will say I did convert a few Brits to the Church of the Most Holy BRRRRRRRRRRT in my time though.

I know conspiracy theories can quickly ruin this thread, but it is easy to wonder about the various scenarios around Putin's illness and recent reports of a potential coup.
I believe the doctors are in on the coup. They are giving the recommendation to Putin for surgery where he'll ultimately be whacked. It's a lot less threatening then someone assassinating him out in the open. They easily could give him falsified medical reports along with medications for his illness, but the meds are actually making him sick, leading him to believe that surgery is imperative.
That's my uninformed, lone contribution to this thread. Thank you all for keeping the war updates coming. I really appreciate the daily updates that are posted here.

Not a conspiracy theory in the least. Based on what we've seen, Putin is facing major health issues. He's going in for surgery. That makes him weak. Speculating about how that shakes out is very much on topic for this thread.

If it’s the same Kool Aid I drunk for 41 years when it comes to the actual strength of the Russian military (outside of nukes) VS the western world, especially the USA, then it was some rancid arse Kool Aid.

Interesting article from The Economist
Why Russia's Army Sucks
Why Russia's Army Sucks
quote:
In part, Russia’s woes are down to Ukraine’s heroic resistance, buoyed by a torrent of Western weaponry and intelligence. “But just as much credit for the shattering of Russian illusions lies in a phenomenon long known to military sociologists,” writes Eliot Cohen of Johns Hopkins University, “that armies, by and large, reflect the qualities of the societies from which they emerge.” Russia’s state, says Mr Cohen, “rests on corruption, lies, lawlessness and coercion”. Each one has been laid bare by Russia’s army in this war.

i have a feeling our sixth generation fighter will be so far ahead of everyone else, like the raptor when it came out, that it will take decades for everyone else to catch up because its kinda what we do. we overkill
