Given the slapdick manner in which Russia has prosecuted this war, it's just as likely to be an accident. Regardless, a sunken ship, a lot of casualties and a key port supplying the siege of Mariupol out of action.

***BREAKING*** Now beyond any reasonable doubt that a #Russian Navy Alligator Class landing ship exploded in #Berdiansk, Ukraine Reportedly a Ukrainian ballistic missile strike. Two Ropucha Class ships also present, observed sailing away as fire raged.

Churchill (per usual) put it best on why he was thrilled for the US to join the war and was happy about the horrors at Pearl Harbor writing this in one of his memoirs after the war:
quote:
No American will think it wrong of me if I proclaim that to have the United States at our side was to me the greatest joy. I could not foretell the course of events. I do not pretend to have measured the marshall might of Japan, but now at this very moment I knew the United States was in the war up to the neck and in to the death. So we had won after all!
England would live; Britain would live; the Commonwealth of Nations and the Empire would live. How long the war would last or in what fashion it would end, no man could tell, nor did I at this moment care. Once again in our long island history we should emerge, however mauled or mutilated, safe and victorious. We should not be wiped out. Our history would not come to an end. We might not even have to die as individuals.
Hitler’s fate was sealed. Mussolini’s fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder. All the rest was merely the proper application of overwhelming force…United we could subdue everybody else in the world. Many disasters, immeasurable cost and tribulation lay ahead, but there was no more doubt about the end.
Seems like the older generations of leaders knew how to speak properly. Imagine Trump delivering such a message.

Thanks for the 4 page overnight update on the progression of WW2 and the Manhattan Project. I sure hope the Allies can finish strong. Maybe one day there will be a war between Russia and the Ukraine and we can get a dedicated thread for that.

If Trump had given that exact same speech, word for word, the left wing would have immediately sided with Nazi Germany and Japan

You are obviously heavily invested in this. If Russia is allowed to continue to go balls to the wall on Ukraine it won't even be worth living in.
1. Russia hasn’t gone balls to the walls during the first month when they were at their strongest. What most people are surprised at and wondering is why they didn’t?
2. Ukraine was a country worth living in before the war?
3. Ukraine has rebuilt before. Leveling the cities the USSR rebuilt after WW2 would be an improvement on the eyesore that is Soviet architecture.

Dang, would one of those landing ships have men on them at the time of the attack?
Its amazing how many people on this thread attempt to ruin it by diverting to other topics. I would imagine anytime they see a butterfly they are completely lost. Take your Germans to the soccer board nimwads.

Which is why I'm surprised that people are confused by citizens of other countries wanting to go fight the Russians in Ukraine.
It's not like this is a new concept.
He'll there were Indians fighting for the Nazis so they could fight against the English

No doubt one goal was to control the black Sea. That's all but wrapped up.
They don’t have any more control of the Black Sea today, than they had before their invasion. Yes they may have a couple of more ports today, but ports are not equal to control of the sea.
Russia is going to lose this war, truthfully they already have, they just haven’t realized it yet. When Russia Sue’s for peace, Ukraine should demand the return of the eastern areas and Crimea in exchange for letting the Russian army withdraw.

I have a simple question for you military guys. How/why was that ship suddenly "within shooting distance" or "on the radar" of a missile attack? I mean it or another ship has probably been there a few days at least. Maybe a missile launcher snuck in within shooting distance? Or they just randomly saw it with a drone and got its coordinates?

Actually, yes. The major cities like Kyiv still have that soviet block brutalist vibe, but the countryside is absolutely beautiful. And like Poland, they're actively working to restore their cities to what they were like prior to the Soviet era.

It’s really not… thousands of international volunteers fought for the republicans in the Spanish civil war vs Franco and the fascists.

The Russians won't accept that. Ukraine will need to allow the annexation of the Donbas region and allow Russia a small part of Crimea. Here's why:
Russia's economy stalls in the winter due to their lack of warm water ports. Crimea is nearly their only warm port. A good compromise would be Ukraine allowing Russia to have the port but Ukraine gets to keep the off-shore exclusive economic zone which contains billions in O&G.
While Russia won't win they can ensure Ukraine does not win either by drawing this conflict into a perpetual state of war/instability.
A solid treaty would be:
what I just mentioned above, maybe have Russia "purchase" the land like we did in alaska and Louisiana
Ukraine declares they will not join NATO or EU but will be part of a military/trade alliance of Eastern European nations
Russia formally guarantees Ukrainian sovereignty
Russian Sanctions are lifted and EU/USA provides aid to help rebuild Ukraine. It's important for us to help rebuild because that will go a LONG way in developing long term friendly relations with Ukraine. Ukraine has the reserves to provide natural gas to Europe and act as a competitor balancing Russia's willingness to hold the EU hostage

I’m shocked there hasn’t been a comedy yet made about Operation Paperclip with a bunch of Jewish scientists having to work alongside the Paperclip scumbags. It writes itself. That actually happened, and I can only imagine how pissed and how much blood they spilt by biting their tongues over working with these people that executed their own relatives. That seems like prime dark comedy material.
Speaking of which, one of my very favorite things I’ve read on the poliboard lately was that Einstein was a “nazi” and should have gone to the gulag if not for operation Paperclip. The more you know!
