maybe have Russia "purchase" the land like we did in alaska and Louisia
That’s not going to happen. Putin contends that Donbas wants to be part of Russian and that the reason he invaded was to preempt the imminent invasion contemplated by Ukraine. How is he going to justify paying for a region which he contends has requested to be part of Russia.

Russia formally guarantees Ukrainian sovereignty
This is similarly unlikely, but more important, it’s a worthless promise. Russia will continue to try chipping away at the frontier.

Russia has other ports on the Black Sea than Crimea. It ships oil from Siberia and Kazakhstan at Novorossysk loading supertanker with oil from 3 mooring buoys and smaller tankers with refined products at docks.

Ukraine gets its natural gas from Russia. It has almost no natural gas and oil reserves. The natural gas pipelines running THROUGH it were built during the USSR and to supply Ukraine and Europe.

Bizarrely,Russia is still shipping gas across Ukraine and paying Ukraine for the privilege.

Baloney, they just have not exploited their deposits to the full potential yet
Article from 2019
Y'all think this war is about Nazis??? This shite is about taking over a land holding billions in precious natural resources from neon to O&G. Russia gets to eliminate a competitor AND steal their resources

They have productive reserves within their territory. They just suck at allowing companies to explore and extract.

#Russian Navy Alligator Class landing ship exploded in #Berdiansk, Ukraine Reportedly a Ukrainian ballistic missile strike. Two Ropucha Class ships also present, observed sailing away as fire raged.
Hopefully it was loaded.

Apparently it was according to whoever posted these videos.

ETA: toward the end they say it's speculated that the location of the ship was found from someone on the ship posting a video and revealing their location. I have a feeling there were several western satellite photos and videos given to the Ukrainians that showed that location. However, if you're going to hit a ship, why wouldn't you go ahead and hit the other two sitting right next to them?

Yeah something was cooking off there.

Russia Today did a TV report from there a few days ago. If it was a missile, (could just have easily been an accident) maybe they only had one, or only had time to fire one to avoid counterbattery fire. At any rate, the result couldn't have been much better. Those facilities will be out of commission for the foreseeable future.

One of the other 2 ships was on fire, but it is impossible to tell if it took a hit or if the fire is collateral damage.

Ukraine likely doesn't have a lot of cruise missiles. Possible they thought that one was a more valuable target since its was the biggest of the three.

I like this reason better,
Ukraine destroys Russian landing ship after state media revealed its location with propaganda footage: Huge fireball rises over port that had been taken by Putin's forces
The link has multiple videos including the state media/propaganda one.

Russia said it was a Tochka ballistic missile (Scarab)
Edit - the CEP is 95 meters.
