Afghanistan is thousands of miles away from the US with a different language and culture.
Ukraine has been apart of Russia in the past and has the same culture and language.
Don’t think that the CIA infiltrating it for a a few decades makes it on the same playing field as a random middle eastern country. Not even close.
Maybe like they tried to rebuild Afghanistan then?

By force.

Language, yes. Culture, not so much. Ukraine thinks of themselves as Europeans, not Russians.
Putin will not be able to just "absorb" Ukraine. They will fight like hell, no matter what he does. Like Afghanistan.
ETA: I say this as having spent time in Ukraine, working with the Ukrainian military.

Another point to that is what is Russia going to rebuild Ukraine with? Sticks, twine and some rocks?
They have nothing of value anymore and will not be able to hold or police such a large nation that wants all of them dead.
Russia fooked.

Afghanistan is thousands of miles away from Moscow. That’s not the same thing. Ukraine borders Russia and isn’t far at all from Moscow.
Putin doesn’t want to deal with the CIA/State Department running a country on his border any longer that has historical ties to Russia and the Soviet Union.

What part of "they will fight like hell" are you not quite comprehending?
You think Ukrainians are just going to roll over and allow themselves to be dominated by Russia again?
Here's a tip: they're not.

Marine Raiders
Quick hijack question: Why are the Marine Raiders not hyped up like Navy SEALs, Green Berets or Rangers, or even Air Force Combat Controllers?
Are they just not as specialized as some of the others and therefore do t get called on for some of the more complex missions? Or do they do the same cool shite, but just don't publicize them as much as SEALs? Or are they just not trained as much/as well as the other groups?
I've always wondered why we never hear as much about the Raiders as others SF groups.

Also, linguists have pointed out that Ukrainian has the same level of similarity with Russian as English does with the Dutch language.
In other words, they have some similarities, but they definitely aren't the same.

Can we get a few F-35 sorties at night?
We literally could end this war in one night with absolute plausible deniability
The Soviets placed Soviet pilots in direct combat against us in Korea and Vietnam. It's time we do the same

The Kievan Rus and the Grand Duchy of Moscow were combined by the Mongols after their invasion and conquest of both. The Kievan Rus resisted the Mongols more than Moscow did so the Mongols murdered more nobles of the Kievan Rus than they did Moscow nobles. Plus the Kieven Rus was hit harder by the plagues of the middle ages. When the Mongols were pushed out, the nobles of Grand Duchy of Moscow filled the power gap. After the collapse of the Russian Empire, Ukraine fought against being part of the USSR and only became part of the USSR as the point of a gun. Ukraine left the USSR as soon as it could. It also left the CIS as soon as it could as well.
Ukraine does not want to be Russian and never have.

They’re new and still trying to figure themselves out. At first they were going to be more like Green Berets but the army already has a gazzilion of those guys doing that mission so now I think they’re more Direct Action/Deep Reconnaissance type guys. They’ll eventually get there but Marines historically don’t play well with others so they’ve had a tough time fitting themselves into the JSOC/SOCOM joint way of life.
Back in the early 2000’s when MARSOC was first created the USMC had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the SOF world. The organization as whole wanted no part of it.

Explain how any of this explains why the Ukrainians won’t resist? Why do you think they’ll just accept Putin and Russia as their leaders? They are clearly trying hard to repel them right now but for some reason you think they’ll just roll over if they get defeated?

Part of that might be that it is relatively new. The name Marine Raider was only recently resurrected in 2014. Prior to that it hadn't been used since WW2.
Marine special operations under MARSOC has only been around since 2006. Before that the marines had dismissed the notion of creating a special operations unit because their espoused opinion was that all marines are elite.

Most in this country most likely won't. It's help to be enlightened or pointed by link in the right direction considering the variety of information out there. And you have worked with the Ukrainians. You probably have an insightful perspective.
