I think if someone shut down political groups that represent the sentiments of a sizeable portion of the population there would likely be some push-back, yes.

I think if one group representing less than 10% of the population supported the country that was actively shelling Washington DC, the other 90% would probably tell them to get bent.

It’s war. And while I understand that it’s not great for the democratic process, the political gloves tend to come off when you’re being invaded by a superpower. Far worse things have happened in America during times of war.

I think your representation of the argument is inaccurate. Favorable opinions toward Russia are more than 10% of the population, especially if you count the eastern portions of Ukraine as well as Crimea.

Sure, I just don't think that while we're being told that this is the front line of democracy, the guy who's supposed to be the posterchild should be banning political parties while he's trying to keep his capital from being overrun. Seems like an odd prioritization.

i think we can say it both a) isnt the greatest democratic thing to do and b) its war, idk what people would expect out of any government that is currently being invaded by another country

All is good as long as you win. If you lose, there could be very severe consequences.

That's not an unfair assessment

See the Communist Control Act of 1954. The United States bans political parties as well.
Churchill government banned the British Union of Fascists in 1940. May have banned/ suspended or investigated others, but the BUF I know for sure was outright banned.

If Putin nukes warsaw, at launch this should be detected and we would have what 15-20 minutes before the blast to respond. We could probably take out putin, (100 mile square area turned to glass), Moscow, maybe 5 or 6 other cities before that nuke even hits depending where exactly our subs are located

and thats why if they ever use a strategic nuke, it would be a large preemptive strike across western europe and the united states as opposed to just a one off strike against a single city

Ag, I agree.

Do you remember the beginning of the Movie “War Games”, ? You hope someone over there cares about something or someone enough to not want to destroy the world.

Plus god knows where there missiles would actually hit, not like it matters much, but they are what 40% on target

Interesting take indicating that Putin wants to make a deal. (i don’t buy it but let’s hope they are right)

If his response to being backed into a corner is to nuke his enemy, we have to let Ukraine fall or hope Putin dies before he gets backed into a corner there, or else he will nuke Lviv and Kyiv.

It would be shocking if they nuked Kyiv. Russians consider it to be the cradle of the Russian nation.

It would be like an Arab nation nuking Jerusalem.

It's so important culturally to them that it's practically unthinkable.

Paywall, so IDK if it addresses sanctions. I assume Russia will want lifting them to be part of it as well as probably the return of frozen assets, so a lot of others would have to sign off on it

Ukraine desperately needs the killing to stop. OTOH any deal acceptable to Russia would reward Putin for his criminality and that's a bad road to continue down. If he gets away with his Ukraine aggression we won't hear the last of him. He has a wrecked army, but it can be rebuilt, and he still has nukes.

Democracy in Russia helped Putin get power and hopefully will end his reign. I'm hoping a seemingly innocuous set of circumstances changes the outcome of this invasion. Biden needs to get off the bike, hop on AF1 and go to Europe. Give a Kennedy-like speech in Berlin or pop up in Poland. A little Howard Beale could go a long way. Instead of mumbling to a reporter about putin being a war criminal, shout it from the rooftops!
(felt like a mumble to me)
