No. But Russia lost already. And with hundreds of thousands of casualties and hundreds of billions of dollars wasted, there is no winner.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 20 October 2023
On 17 October 2023, several Russian helicopters and air defence equipment were likely struck at Berdyansk and Luhansk airfields. Although the extent of damage is currently unconfirmed, it is likely nine Russian military helicopters at Berdyansk and five at Luhansk were destroyed, with Ukraine claiming to have used the US-provided long-range army tactical missiles (ATACMS) for the first time.
Given that Russian fixed wing close air support to date has been extremely poor, Russian defensive lines have become increasingly reliant on rotary wing support in the face of the Ukrainian offensive. Berdyansk was being used as a primary Forward Operating Base on the southern axis providing both logistics and offensive/defensive capabilities. If confirmed, it is highly likely these losses will have an impact on Russia's ability both to defend and conduct further offensive activity on this axis. Given the current strain on Russian military production, the confirmed loss of any air frames will be difficult to replace in the short to medium term.
This loss will also likely create additional pressure on Russia's pilots and air frames, already almost certainly suffering combat exhaustion and maintenance issues due to the unanticipated protracted campaign. There is a realistic possibility this strike will compel Russia to once again relocate its operating bases and command and control nodes farther from the front lines, increasing the burden on logistics chains.

Ukrainian sources are claiming that Russia just made another massive attack on Avdiivka that failed. They are claiming, for example, to have destroyed over 50 Russian tanks within the last 24 hours.
We'll have to wait to see if Russia has made any real progress, but for now, Ukrainian sources are jubilant.
EDIT: Ukrainian claims of 55 tanks and 1380 soldiers killed are the largest Ukrainian single-day claims of the war.

The helicopter carnage at Berdyansk was worse than previously reported. From new satellite images, it's possible to determine more damage.
Photos and evidence
EDIT: And all that is besides the helicopters destroyed in Luhansk with the ATACMS strike there, which took out at least four.

Interesting political chess move from Russia

quote:
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu demanded the extradition to Russia of former SS veteran Yaroslav Hunka, who was given a standing ovation in the Canadian parliament during Zelenskyy's visit. Canadian authorities later said they had invited the Nazi veteran by mistake and apologized.
"The facts of Nazi Hunka's direct participation in atrocities against the peaceful Soviet population on the territory of Lviv region, then the territory of the USSR, including the genocide of Poles and Jews, give us every reason to demand his extradition for prosecution," Shoigu was quoted as saying by the Russian Defense Ministry's Telegram channel. His statement also said that the lives of "hundreds, if not thousands of our citizens, including children," could be on Hunka's conscience.
Shoigu instructed the law enforcement agencies of Russia and Belarus to solve the issue of extradition.
The Russian Investigative Committee has charged SS veteran Yaroslav Hunka, who lives in Canada, in absentia with genocide.
Investigators are deciding whether to put him on an international wanted list and have sent requests for legal assistance to Canada, Poland and Belarus.

In this instance Russia may be right.

They’re doing this strictly to try and excite mouthbreathers like Errerwhere, never mind that the USSR had a pact with nazi germany and collaborated with them to massacre the Poles (much like they have an alliance with Iran now). I have to imagine the Russian propaganda officials are tickled pink by how dumb our populace is.

Good lord. Russia had already lost ~50-60 verified armored vehicles before this latest assault.
If this proves accurate, Russia will have lost 110+ armored vehicles in a 10 day span.
That's not a sustainable rate of loss, and they've gained nothing while losing a bit of ground in other sectors.

They still have their country or at least most of it. It's not been the 2 week cake walk that Putin and many others believed.

Plus 5 more helicopters destroyed at Luhansk although the types haven’t been revealed yet so far as I’ve seen but the Russians have changed their tactics with helicopter sorties where they typically run 3 helicopters together. A Ka-52 flys out front with a Mi-24 a little behind and then they have a Mi-8 in the trail position behind them that stays well behind the lines in case one of the attack helicopters gets shot down they can pick the downed crew up. Hopefully at least 1 of the 5 destroyed in Luhansk is another Ka-52 which is very likely. Ukraine got their money’s worth with that simultaneous strike, that’s for damn sure. I think everyone finally realized that not making public weapons deliveries works in Ukraine’s favor. It’s just a shame it took them this long to implement.

What possible risk/. reward calculus could the Russians possibly be looking at to justify the risk of those type of losses?
What strategic advantage would justify this type of repeated, costly attack?

It's impossible to know why the Russians are doing what the Russians are doing.
I tend to think they're really struggling to hold on in the south. They've been getting hit pretty hard for months and I'm sure they're hoping to relieve the pressure.
This could be the worst of all worlds, though -- massive losses, no gains, no relief for the south.
